  1. Comparison of GLOBAEROSOL products in the frame of AeroCom Michael Schulz Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement Gif-sur-Yvette, France Stefan Kinne Max-Planck-Institut for Meteorology Hamburg, Germany

  2. quick (annual) AOD check • ATSR • underestimates in dust regions • overestimate in biomass regions • SEVIRI • severe biomass overestimates • useful over-land estimates ? • MERIS • apparent land snow cover issue • merged • not the envisioned improvement  ‘-’ ’+’ 

  3. Evaluation of GLOBAEROSOL products a la Aerocom • Monthly 1x1 gridded data were compared to daily(=>monthly) Aeronet AOD and Angstroem Component From year 2004 and climatological average year • MISR, 2xMODIS, ATSR-Swansey, POLDER, Modell-Median are used as reference, all available years and clim. year • 4 GLOBAER-ATSR product versions were studied • Evaluation catalogue is available via AeroCom web interface Aeronet site locations 2004

  5. CONCLUSIONS intercomparison I GLOBAER_ATSR slightly smaller coverage No data for multi-annual performance check for ATSR AOD@550 nm Exact matching comparison could not be achieved, but sufficient number of data for robust statistics GLOBAER MERIS&SEVIRI have a considerable positive bias (ca. 0.03 AOD) Meris has too low variability, Seviri too high; ATSR slightly high RMS Error: SEVIRI > ATSR = MERIS >> MISR > 2xMODIS = Polder (only coastal) = Modell Median Correlation: MERIS < SEVIRI = ATSR < ATSR-Swansey << MISR = Modell Median < 2xMODIS = Polder Spatial correlation: MERIS < ATSR = Modell Median < Seviri < ATSR-Swansey = 2MODIS < MISR Seasonal correlation: Seviri = MERIS = ATSR < Modell Median < ATSR Swansey < MISR/MODIS/POLDER

  6. quick (annual) AOD check • ATSR • underestimates in dust regions • overestimate in biomass regions • SEVIRI • severe biomass overestimates • useful over-land estimates ? • MERIS • apparent land snow cover issue • merged • not the envisioned improvement  ‘-’ ’+’ 

  11. quick annual Angstrom check • ATSR • underestimates in tropics • overstimates in south. oceans • SEVIRI • underestimates over oceans • strong overestimates over land • MERIS • overestimates over land • merged • not the envisioned improvement  ‘-’ ’+’ 
