  1. School of Earth & Environment Pre-Enrolment meeting between Programme Managers and Students: Year 1

  2. Learning outcomes Year 1: • Bring everyone up-to-speed with geology and related earth science topics, plus maths and chemistry. Year 2: • More detailed studies of geology, plus the application of other scientific disciplines where appropriate. • Application of geological information to situations outside the context of original study. • Learn to critically evaluate the methods used to generate primary data and for the interpretation of those data.

  3. GS Level 2 structure 2011-12 Earth resources (10) Chem. Earth (10) Basin evolution (10) Ig.Met petrology (10) Sed. processes (10) Deformation processes (10) Mineralogy (10) Careeer Skills (10) Field/map Skills (20) Palaeontology (10) Option (10) • Notes • Everyone has 10 credits of option choice • Petroleum Pathway students advised to take Explorations Seismics • Environmental Pathway students advised to take Contaminated Land

  4. Pathways within the GS programme What are pathways? Coherent groupings of modules chosen to give you the best preparation for particular branches of geology Who says they are the best portfolios? Colleagues in industry who will be in a position to employ you

  5. Pathways within the GS programme • 'Geology pathway' provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake a broad and balanced programme of study that provides general coverage of all of the key areas within the discipline.'Petroleum pathway' provides training in exploration geophysics, sedimentology, structural geology, and resource geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the hydrocarbons industry.'Minerals pathway' provides a background in ore geology, mineral exploration and structural geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the extractive (mineral exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry. ‘Environment pathway’ A route through the degree programme designed to prepare graduates for employment in the environmental science sector, where the practical application of geological principals is used to solve environmental problems. • Regardless of which pathway is followed, successful completion of the programme (which is accredited by the Geological Society) will lead to the degree qualification of BSc Geological Sciences. Nothing different on transcript but useful on CV, and for references.

  6. Is the geology pathway ‘non vocational’? NO!! Core GS programme Basic high quality grounding for all aspects of geological employment = + = Pathway Added value in specific fields of employability

  7. A route through the degree programme designed to prepare graduates for employment in the mining and minerals sector The Minerals pathway EXIT POINTS Industry Postgraduate study Exploration Geology Mining Geology Leeds: Msc Structural/Mining P/G study elsewhere (inc. overseas) Major companies: Australia, Pacific Rim, S. America Major or minor companies, jobs worldwide New for 2011 UK, Canada, Australia

  8. Choices on the minerals pathway: Are designed to give a portfolio which gives you the best platform in the international jobs market BUT one area where we lag behind overseas Universities is in the ability to get you industrial experience/exposure. You can solve this up to a point by joining:

  9. Leeds Chapter of The Society of Economic Geology (SEG) SEG field trip to Cononish Gold Mine Field trips over and above those in the curricula
