Introduction Emotional intelligence: “a type of social intelligence that involves in the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions.” (Salovey and Mayer, 1990) Advantage of the study is we can know the emotional intelligence level of Biomedical Science students and some emotional intelligence improvement courses can be suggested.

  4. Research Question What is the emotional intelligence level among year one to year three students of Biomedical Science Programme of Faculty of Health Science, UKM KL, session 2011/2012?

  5. Hypothesis • The emotional intelligence level among year one to year three students of Biomedical Science Programme of Faculty of Health Science, UKM KL, session 2011/2012 is low.

  6. General Objective To determine the emotional intelligence level among year one to year three students of Biomedical Science Programme, UKM.

  7. Specific Objectives • To determine the percentage of low, average and high of emotional intelligence level among students. • To compare the mean of emotional intelligence of students among gender. • To compare the mean of emotional intelligence of students among their residential area. • To compare the mean of emotional intelligence of students among year of study.

  8. 5) To determine association between emotional intelligence level of students and gender. 6) To determine association between emotional intelligence level of students and residential area. 7) To determine association between emotional intelligence level of students and year of study.

  9. Research Methodology • Exclusion Factor: • Students have emotional • problems . Inclusion Factor: 1st year to 3rd year biomedical science student

  10. Pilot Study Reliability Test - Cronbach’s Alpha • Our result is 0.827 • Therefore, it is highly reliable.

  11. Sample Size

  12. Demographic Data : Frequency and Percentages of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Biomedical Science Students according to Gender Frequency The number of sample size of male is just 25 because the population of male is small where the total number of male in population is only 29.

  13. Frequency and Percentage among Biomedical Science Students according to Year of Study 43.6% 36.8% Frequency 19.6% Year of Study The number of subjects of each year of study is selected by calculation of proportion.

  14. Frequency and Percentage among Biomedical Science Students according to Residential Area 68.4% Frequency 31.6% Residential area The residential area of students are obtained through questionnaires answered by the subjects.

  24. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 2 To compare the mean of EI of students among gender

  25. Test Used Independent t Test

  26. Normality Test • Sig. value = 0.200 • Since Sig. > 0.05, data is normally distributed. Group statistic Male: x = 111.84 , s = 12.919 Female: x = 112.02 , s = 10.230 The mean of male students is lower than female students but standard deviation is higher than that in female students.

  27. Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances • F = 0.529 , Sig. = 0.468 • Since Sig value > 0.05, Ho is not rejected. So, equal variance is assumed. • Independent Samples Test • From the data equal variance assumed: • t = -0.075 , df = 131 • p = 0.941 • Since p value > 0.05. So, Ho is not rejected. • We can conclude that there is no significant difference between the mean of EI level among male students and female students.

  28. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 3 To compare the mean of EI of students among their residential area

  30. Normality Test • Significant value is 0.200 • Since Sig. value > 0.05, data is normally distributed. Groupstatistic KTSN: x = 112.55 , s = 10.947 OTHER THAN KTSN: x = 110.76 , s = 10.274 The mean and standard deviation of KTSN students are higher than that in other than KTSN students.

  31. Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances • F = 0.029 , Sig. = 0.866 • Since Sig > 0.05, Ho is not rejected. So, equal variance is assumed. Independent Samples Test • From the data equal variance assumed: • t = 0.892, df = 131 • p = 0.374 • Since p value > 0.05, so Ho is not rejected. • We can conclude that there is no significant difference between the mean of EI level among students staying in KTSN and other than KTSN.

  32. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 4 To compare the mean of EI of students among year of study

  33. Test Used One-Way between Groups ANOVA

  34. Normality Test • Significant value = 0.200 • Since Sig value > 0.05, the data is normally distributed. Group Statistic YEAR 1: x =114.35, s = 13.320 YEAR 2: x = 113.16, s = 9.592 YEAR 3: x = 109.93, s = 10.169 The mean and standard deviation of Year 1 are the highest compared to that in Year 2 and Year 3.

  35. One-Way Between Groups ANOVA • F = 2.017, df (2, 130) • p = 0.137 • p value > 0.05, Ho is not rejected. • Thus, we can conclude that there is no statistically significant difference between mean of emotional intelligence and year of study.

  36. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 5 To determine association between EI level of students and gender

  39. % within gender • In total, 25 respondents are male. Of these, 80.0% of them have average EI level and another 20.0% of them have high EI level. • In total, 108 respondents are female. Of these, 79.6% of them have average EI level and another 20.4% of them have high EI level.

  40. Chi-Square Test • χ² = 0.02, df = 1 • p = 0.967 • Since p value > α (0.05), Hois not rejected. • We can conclude that there is no association between EI level and gender of biomedical science students.

  41. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 6 To determine association between EI level of students and residential area

  44. % within residence: • In total, 91 respondents are staying at KTSN. Of these, 76.9% of them have average EI level and another 23.1% of them have high EI level. • In total, 42 respondents are staying at other than KTSN. Of these, 85.7% of them have average EI level and another 14.3% of them have high EI level.

  45. Chi-Square Test • χ² = 1.373, df = 1 • p = 0.241 • P value > α (0.05), Hois not rejected. • We can conclude that there is no association between EI level and residential area of biomedical science students.

  46. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE 7 To determine association between EI level of students and year of study

  49. % within year of study • In total, 26 respondents are Year 1 students. Of these, 65.4% of them have average EI level and another 34.6% of them have high EI level. • In total, 49 respondents are Year 2 students. Of these, 79.6% of them have average EI level and another 20.4% of them have high EI level. • In total, 58 respondents are Year 3 students. Of these, 86.2% of them have average EI level and another 11.8% of them have high EI level.

  50. Chi-Square Test • χ² = 4.811, df = 2 • p = 0.090 • P value > α (0.05), Hois not rejected. • We can conclude that there is no association between EI level and year of study of biomedical science students.
