When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself... -- Heb 6:13 Let’s Distinguish: From

  4. God made three promises: • To send a Redeemer. • To giveHis Spirit. • That Jesus would return a 2nd time. Let’s look at this one

  5. THE FATHER MADE THIS PROMISE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT First Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. – Lk 24:45-46

It is spoken of by the prophets • Isa 44:2-3 "This is what the Lord says--he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, who I have chosen. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.“

  8. It’s a promise for everyone: • Joel 2:28-29 "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.” • Peter said, …this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: -- Acts 2:16

  10. Jesus put a lot of stock in the Father's Promise. • He not only Knew about it. • He expected the Father to fulfill His promise.

  11. If there’s a "promise of the Father“ I want it! • After all, it’s • Something we desperately need. • The promise of a reliable person.

  12. FOLK LIKE US TELL OF HAVING RECEIVED THE FATHER’S PROMISE Third …you are witnesses of these things. – v 48a

  14. Believers in Samaria got in on God’s promise. • When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. – Acts 8:14-17

  15. Cornelius and his household received it. • While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.– Acts 10:44

  16. Believers in Ephesus experienced it. • When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them....– Acts 19:6

  17. STEP FORWARD AND RECEIVE THE FATHER’S PROMISE Now Then... …stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. – v 49b

  18. You may not fully understand The concept of the "fullness of the Holy Spirit" • But you know how to trust your Father. • It’s His promise • He knows how to keep it. • Jesus said he would send us the "promise of the Father". The Promise of God's Holy Spirit is just what we need!
