  1. To Be A Slave Title: Julius Lester Author: Name: Kaitlynn Hoang Period: 6th

  2. Context Clues

  3. Text Purpose • I think the author wrote this book to inform readers how torturing slavery was. He got real-past slaves to write about how they felt and that showed he wanted the facts to be true. His intended audience would probably people who want to learn about history or adults/teenagers.

  4. Text Structure • The way the author wrote this story could be comparing and contrasting or chronological order. There are many people who felt differently about their slave owners. And, the chapters seem to be in order.

  5. Past: 1. They were owned 2. Masters 3. Family= GONE (sold, death) 4. Jobs= NO money or food 5. Wooden Pillows Present: 1. We are FREE! 2. Parents 3. Family= HERE 4. Jobs= income and leisure 5. Soft Pillows Both: 1. Racism 2. Stereotype 3. Abusive 4. Language 5. Songs Text Representation

  13. Response Reading #1: “I had never seen white people before and they appeared to me the ugliest creatures in the world.” (Page 22)- Many people in our community are stereotypical and judge by someone's looks. It is offending. I've heard many say bad things about ones appearance. #3:”Ol’ miss and massa was not mean to us at all until after surrender and we were freed.” (Page 147)- I can relate to this because when I tell on my siblings, they stop messing with me. They know they’ll get in trouble. #2: “I wanted to ride in the buggy, but I didn’t want to go with him.” (Page 50)- I always act like this when I don’t want to go with my brother ‘cause he’s so annoying! Just like slave owners.
