Rates and Unit Rates. How can we use this information to find out how many times our heart beats in one minute or one hour?. Find your pulse? How many times does your heart beat in 15 seconds?. A rate is a ratio of two quantities using different units. Example: You pay $20 for 2 pizzas.

  3. A rate is a ratio of two quantities using different units. Example: You pay $20 for 2 pizzas. Rate = Example: A car travels 250 miles in 5 hours. Rate = Example: It costs $36.00 for 4 turtlenecks at Walmart. Rate =

  4. A unit rate compares a quantity to one unit of the other quantity. Example: 45 miles per hour Unit Rate = In this example you found a special kind of unit rate, called the unit price. Example: $8.00 for each pizza Unit Rate = This is the price per unit and is useful when you want to compare the cost of an item that comes in different sizes.

  11. The 14.75 oz can of Spaghettios is $.98. The 26.25 oz can is $2.12. Which can of Spaghettios is the better buy? Why?

  12. Julia read 52 pages in 2 hours. What is the average number of pages she read per hour? At this rate how many pages will she read in 5 hours?

  13. Sum it up! Maria is at a gas station getting gas for her new car. She pays a $50.00 for 11 gallons of gas. Elliot is at another gas station getting gas for his new car. He pays $48.00 for 10 gallons of gas. Who paid less per gallon? Round your answer to the nearest hundredth. Why is it important to pay less per gallon? Explain. How much would Maria pay for 15 gallons of gas at the same station?
