  3. The Midpoint Formula • Now that you have seen the video, it’s time to introduce: The Midpoint Formula

  4. The Midpoint Formula • For example, when you have 2 endpoints: [ A(-1, 2) and B(3, -6)], x1and x2 would replace -1 and 3 respectively; y1 and y2 would then replace 2 and -6. Continued Find out why here

  5. Solving the ‘x’ (left) side • Solve each side separately (easier). • For the ‘x’ side: • (-1) + 3 = 2 • 2/2 = 1

  6. Solving the ‘y’ (right) side • Then, for the ‘y’ side: • 2 + (-6) = -4 • (-4)/2 = -2

  7. Solved! • The answer for the midpoint would be: • Midpoint (1, -2) • That’s the conventional method to find the midpoint. • But as long as you remember that you're averaging the two points' x- and y-values, you will do fine. It won't matter which point you pick to be the ‘first’ point you start with.
