Dangers of Sexting ! • Most people aren’t aware of the dangers really involved when sending a sexually explicit picture through their phone or the internet. • Over the past several years , the number of people sexting has increased, while the ages of those people creating the sexually explicit images and videos have decreased. • Source: 2009 people magazine

FACTS ABOUT SEXTING ! • 22% of teens (ages 14 to 17) have been involved in some form of nude sexting. • Nearly 40% of all teens have posted or sent sexually suggestive messages, but this practice is more common among boys than girls. • Sending semi-nude or nude photos is more common among teen girls. 22% of teen girls report sending images of this nature , while under 18 % of same – age boys have. • Who will see your sext? 17 % of sexters share the messages they receive with others, and 55% of those share them with more than one person

FACTS ABOUT SEXTING !(cont.) • Teenage girls have few reasons for sexting : 40% do it as a joke, 34% do it to feel sexy, and 12% feel pressured to do it. • Among 14-to-24 year olds who admit to sexting , 29% send these messages to people they have never met, but know from the internet. • While 70% of teen boys and girls who sext do so with their girlfriend or boyfriend, 61% of all sexters who have sent nude images admit that they were pressured to do it at least once. • 11% of teen girls ages 13 to 16 have been involved with sending or receiving sexually explicit messages.

  6. THINGS THAT MAKE TEENS SEXT! • Everyone else is doing it. • My boyfriend/girlfriend asked me to. • To get someone to like you. • Did it as a joke. • My friends dared me to. • Attention. • I was not thinking.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOUR CAUGHT SEXTING? • You can be charged by Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement agencies. • Transmitting, receiving and promoting child pornography. • You could face jail time, probation and you may have to register as a sex offender. • May have to go to mandatory counseling. • Community service. • Civil lawsuit (money)

  9. What happens to you when you sext? • You lose your self respect • You lose your families trust • You lose your friends • You can be bullied over it • You can be forced into doing it again and again! • Mentally and emotionally you can not deal with the situation

How to prevent Sexting ! • Think of the consequences of texting or forwarding a sexy image of someone underage, even if it’s a picture of you. • Don’t take pictures of yourself that you wouldn’t want your teachers, classmates and family members to see. (Everyone) • Before hitting send , remember you cannot control where the image might travel. So if your thinking about sending a sext to a boyfriend or girlfriend, think of the people that it could be forwarded to as a result.

  11. How to prevent Sexting ! (cont) • If you forward a sexual picture of someone underage , you are just as guilty as the original sender. • Report any nude images you may receive to an adult you trust, so they can make a report to local law enforcement. • Remember sexting can start or end with you, what’s your choice?

SEXTING FOR LIFE! • If you send nude images of yourself to a person, that picture has the potential to be out there for life. • When you go to high school. • When you go to college. • When you go for a job. • When you get married. • And when have a family of your own Think about your life now and in the future!!!!!!!!!
