  1. Practical Metallurgy MEC 172 Identify & Select Iron Alloys IV

  2. Carbon & Low Alloy Steels • Some shops color code steel • PROBLEMS AROSE NO SET STANDARD IN INDUSTRY. • SAE and AISI developed a number / letter system • First number indicates type • ex. 1 = Carbon, 2 = Nickel, 3 = Nickel - Chromium • Second digit indicates percent of alloying element • Third and Fourth Digit indicate percent carbon in hundredths IV

  3. Stainless Steel • Steel must have 11% Chromium for resistant to corrosion. • Three Types of Stainless • Martensitic can be hardened. Used in cutlery • Ferritic has no carbon used in pots and pans • Austenitic contains chromium and nickel IV

  4. Tool Steels • Seven major categories 1. Water Hardening tool steel W - high carbon 2. Shock Resisting S - medium carbon 3-7 page 86 • Unified Numbering System • Published by SAE and proposed to ISO • 15 series of numbers for metals and alloys IV

  5. Shop test for identifying steel • Visual • Eddy Current • Magnet • Hardness • Scratch • File • Chemical • Spark • Machinability IV
