  1. CO2 Sequestration by Dave Kahn Submitted to Dr. Thomas Edgar - ChE 379

  2. Outline • Global Warming • Costs • Technical Description • Leakage • Research Efforts • Conclusions • References • Questions

  3. Global Warming source: wikipedia.com

  4. Global Warming source: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/sustainability

  5. Global Warming source: wikipedia.com

  6. Costs • carbon dioxide capture would add 1.5 cents/kWh • carbon dioxide is already being separated via power station flue gases for applications in the food industry

  7. Technical Description http://www.co2captureproject.org/technologies/tech_img2.gif

  8. Leakage The Frio Brine Project source: www.greencarcongress.com

  9. Leakage • To date, no leakage has been detected • However, the study has shown that after the carbon dioxide is sequestered, the chemical properties of the water and the dissolved inorganic carbon change • Changes include: • sharp drops in pH • pronounced increases in alkalinity • significant shifts in the isotopic compositions • Also, it has shown that the CO2 can degrade carbonate substances in the rock

  10. Research Efforts

  11. Conclusions • The Earth is warming! • CO2 capture for sequestration would add ~15% to untaxed energy bill • Sequestration can increase oil recovery efficiency by 10-15% • It has not yet been shown to leak • It has however shown potential for leakage channeling • Recommendations – Much more research
