Freedom of Speech • Pure Speech = spoken words • Symbolic Speech = doing something as a form of expression (i.e. Burning an American Flag or wearing a black armband) • Freedom of the Press = free to criticize and question the gov’t and elected leaders • Libel and slander laws • Censorship??? Limits on Speech???
Freedom of Religion • No official state religion or sponsorship of a religion (establishment clause) • Free exercise thereof… (right to practice your religion freely) • Are there exceptions???
Accessing Gov’t • Right to Peacefully Assemble (hold protests and rallies) • Right to petition the government (you can write your elected officials, ask them questions, etc.)
