  2. Project Overview • The Life Science Academy will organize and host a 5k in the Summer at a local park or track for anybody who wants to participate. • Our goal is to have more than 150 participants. • We are hoping to obtain 950 dollars from Owensboro Health in order to fund this project.

  3. Evidence of the Need • From www.pitinoshelter.org : • “We can always use your help at the Pitino Shelter” • “The Pitino Shelter depends heavily upon the generosity of churches, businesses, individuals, schools, and the community to continue making a difference in the lives of the homeless families we serve.”

  4. Evidence of the Need (cont.) • Our call to the Pitino Shelter highlighted certain points • We talked to James Barnett, Program Director of Pitino Shelter • Public soup kitchen provides 3 meals everyday • 200,000 meals were given out last year • The 65 bed facility is always full • Only shelter in Owensboro that takes women & children • Turns away an average of 87 people away per month

  5. Evidence of Community Health Problem • 460+ Homeless in Owensboro as of 2008 (Peck, 2009) • Growing number due to poor economy • Number of homeless in Owensboro equivalent to the number of students at Tamarack Elementary (City-Data, 2013)

  6. Health Problems of the Homeless • Homeless people often suffer from: • Mental disorders • Substance abuse problems • Issues associated with exposure (frostbite, leg ulcers, etc.) • Malnutrition • These problems often go untreated or are treated inadequately • Source: NCH, 2006

  7. Proposed Solution • We want to organize a 5K in a local park • Choice of either a registration fee or material donation (canned goods, blankets, etc.) in exchange for a t-shirt or wristband • Give out information about the problems of homelessness • Donate proceeds to the Daniel Pitino Shelter

  8. Objective 1: Organizing The 5K • Ask local businesses • Businesses and grant money would fund: • Park rental costs • Costs of t-shirts • Food and beverages for participants

  9. Objective 1: Organizing The 5K (cont.) • Registration • Via text • Name and shirt size • Advertising • Flyers • Radio Advertisement • Possibly TV, but costly • Raise money • $20 to participate • Includes t-shirt w/ sponsors

  10. Objective 2: Purchasing needed materials • Size Distribution will vary among registration response • T-Shirts • Each custom T-shirt will cost around 7.5 dollar depending on amount. • Customink.com • Wristbands • Each wristband will cost about 25 cents. • Reminderband.com

  11. Objective 3: Hosting The Race • 5K Location • Yellow Creek Park • Ben Hawes State Park • Registration fee • $20 • Entry and t-shirt • Proceeds • Pitino Shelter • Donated in winners’ names • LSA students will run registration table, food/beverage booths, water stands, etc.

  12. Yellow Creek Park vs Ben Hawes State Park Hiking Trail + Various Mountain Bike Trails – app. 5+ km Damsite Trail – 4.0 km

  13. Goals • More than 150 participants • Raise 1,000+ dollars and material goods for the Daniel Pitino Shelter. • Encourage people to help the Pitino Shelter. • Increase awareness of homelessness and the problems that come with it.

  14. Outcome & Evaluation • Pitino Shelter can use money to • House more homeless families • Feed residents • Provide healthcare for residents • Other essential services • If each LSA student participated and invited at least two other people to participate, we could raise at least 1,000 dollars

  15. Timeline • Registration Deadline will be May 20th. • People who register after will not receive a T-Shirt • Race will be held Saturday, June 14th • First day of LSA (2014-15) will discuss our effect • Improvements • Ease • Quality of Life of the shelter residents

  16. Obstacles • Persuading sponsors to support this marathon • Choosing the size distribution of the T-Shirts • Getting a proper estimate of people expected • Facing weather • How we are going to handle money received

  17. Project Conclusion • This marathon gives an opportunity for our community to do a good for not only themselves but also for the less fortunate in our area. • With this community benefit project, we hope to have more than 150 participants. • With the help of sponsors and the grant money from Owensboro Health (900 dollars) we hope this marathon could become a reality.
