Mission Statement The mission of Dartmouth Public Schools Project TIME (Teacher Induction and Mentoring Experience) is to support the success of teachers, whether new to the profession or simply new to the district, as well as the veteran teachers who mentor them; thus, providing improved instructional practices and increased student achievement resulting in “Quality Education for All Learners.”

Induction vs. Mentoring • Induction is a process. • Mentoring is an action. • Induction provides group support. • Mentoring provides one-on-one support. • Induction focuses on a broad district-wide perspective. • Mentoring focuses on individual teachers. • Induction programs may or may not have a mentoring component. • Mentoring is a useful component of an induction program.

  9. The Law Says… • “All school districts are required to provide an induction program for all teachers in their first year of practice [603 CMR 7.12].” • Orientation • Mentors • Support Team • Release Time

  10. The Research Says… • “Studies have shown the single greatest effect on student achievement is teacher quality.” U.S. Department of Education. (2004). A guide to education and No Child Left Behind. Washington, DC: Author.

  11. 14% of first time teachers quit in their first year; 33% will leave within 3 years; and after 5 years, 50% of all new teachers will have exited the profession. Ingersoll, R. (2003). Is there really a teacher shortage? University of Washington: Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy.

Role of the Mentor Teacher… • Meet regularly with assigned new teacher(s) • Maintain a level of confidentiality & objectivity • Reinforce school/district policies & procedures • Refer teacher to other support personnel, as needed • Be willing to observe and to be observed • Provide constructive feedback • Serve as a resource • Be a reflective practitioner • Attend meetings related to Project TIME • Participate in evaluation of Project TIME

Role of New Teacher… • Meet regularly with assigned mentor • Welcome support from mentor • Maintain a level of confidentiality & objectivity • Follow school/district policies & procedures • Be willing to observe and to be observed • Be open to constructive feedback • Be a reflective practitioner • Attend meetings related to Project TIME • Participate in evaluation of Project TIME

Role of Director of Mentoring… • Keep up to date with the research base on induction and mentoring • Assist in the training of mentors • Communicate regularly with mentors and new teachers • Act as a liaison to principals and administration • Maintain a level of confidentiality & objectivity • Plan meetings related to Project TIME • Plan and implement evaluation of Project TIME

  17. Welcome Back Meeting Back To School PD Day-Monday, August 26th Pre-Gathering • Mentors and mentees meet before joining the district faculty • Mentees receive button • Mentors accompany mentees to Welcome Back Activities

  18. September (First School Committee Meeting): Pre-Gathering • Mentors and mentees meet with School Committee Members prior to scheduled meeting School Committee Meeting • Mentors and Mentees are formally introduced to School Committee Members
