  4. Kansas Nebraska Act • C. Supported by the South and President Pierce • D. Abolitionist Northerners upset 1. Felt that it repealed Missouri Compromise 2. Slavery could spread to areas that had been free 3. North protested by ignoring Fugitive Slave Act

  5. The Crisis Turns Violent • Douglas hoped that a peaceful election would • decide slavery. (Popular sovereignty) • B. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces sent settlers to fight the issue (using force). • 1. Some were farmers • 2. Border Ruffians – proslavery enforcers from Missouri who attacked antislavery settlers

  6. Kansas • The people in Kansas set up two governments. • One pro-slavery – One abolitionist • Kansas was in Chaos • Armed gangs attacked those with different views

  7. Bleeding Kansas • Battles broke out at Lawrence and Pottawatomie Creek • John Brown led and attack that killed proslavery settlers. • This started violence that killed more than 200 people in Kansas.

  8. Violence in the Senate • Senator Sumner verbally abused Senator Butler. • Butler’s nephew beat Sumner unconscious with a cane.

  9. Scott had been free. Then moved to a slave state. Owner died. Dred Scott was left as a part of the estate. Should Dred Scott be a free man? Dred Scott vs. Sandford

  10. Dred Scott vs. Sandford • Decision: • Scott, as a slave, couldn’t sue. • Congress couldn’t decide slavery issue. • Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.

  11. South happy Slavery legal in all new US states Slaves property North upset Blacks in North held meetings to condemn ruling Northern whites also upset Fredrick Douglas asked that the Constitution be followed The Nation Reacts
