Context and Setting The ‘when and where’ of stories
Context • Context is when the story itself was written. • It is the social and political events that help shape the subject and themes of the story. • Historical context – including the author’s life experience – can help us understand what a story means.
Setting • The SETTING of the story, is the PLACE and TIME that the story is set • Place can be a city, town, countryside or a house, or room • Time can be time of day, year, era in history. • BOTH place and time can change in the story. • BOTH place and time can influence the mood. • Setting can also include the atmostphere. • Setting can also help define a character. • Setting can have symbolic meaning:
Symbols of time • Time of day or season • Morning/spring = new life, hope • Afternoon/summer = fullness of life, vibrancy • Evening/autumn = dying, retreating • Night/winter = ending, death
