The Bolshevik Revolution Fall 1917: People in the cities were rallying to the call “ All power to the soviets: Socialist revolutionaries competing for power consisting of workers, peasants, & soldiers November: Armed factory workers stormed the Winter Palace (Petrograd) Called themselves the Bolshevik Red Guards Took over government offices Arrested the leaders of the provisional government

Bolsheviks in Power Within days after the Bolshevik takeover, Lenin ordered that all farmland be distributed among the peasants Bolsheviks gave control of factories to the workers Bolshevik government signed a truce with Germany to stop all fighting and begin peace talks March 1918: Signed Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

Civil War Rages in Russia Bolsheviks faced new challenge Stamping out their enemies at home Opponent of Bolsheviks formed the White Army Made up of different groups Only the desire to defeat the Bolsheviks united the White Army At one point, there were 3 White Armies fighting against the Bolsheviks’ Red Army The Revolutionary leader, Leon Trotsky commanded the Bolshevik Red Army 1918-1920, civil war raged in Russia In the end, the Red Army crushed all opposition Victory showed that Bolsheviks were able to seize power and maintain it
