  2. Brainstorm What actions could be taken in response to the consequences and effects you listed on the tree?

  3. Discussion What actions from the list they generated that involve the creation of a law or policy ? What are some of the advantages of using laws to address a problem? What are some of the disadvantages? Can you think of other ways to respond to these social problems besides writing a law or policy?

  4. Handout 5: Gun Free Schools Act READ AND DISCUSS WITH A PARTNER (FOR REAL!)

  5. DISCUSSION Do you think this law is necessary or justified? Why? Do you think this law will promote school safety? Explain. Which stakeholders in the community do you think support this law? Which do you think disagree with it? Why?

  6. DISCUSSION CONTINUED Why do we create laws that prohibit or limit certain actions? What are some possible unintended consequences of the GFSA? How might the GFSA increase the likelihood that youth will end up in the juvenile justice system?

  7. HOMEWORK Handout 9: Eye on the Law. Identify one or two instances of media covering an issue related to school safety and the law, and describe how each issue, problem, or case was portrayed by the media. Keep your “eye on the law” throughout the course.
