  2. OBJECTIVES • Student will be able to discuss the purpose of leg and facial markings • Student will be able to identify and describe four horse facial markings. • Students will be able to identify and describe six horse leg markings.

  3. FACIAL MARKINGS

  4. Star • White marking between eyes. • Comes in many shapes.

  5. Stripe • Thin line down front of the head towards the nose

  6. SNIP • Small white fleck between nostrils.

  7. BLAZE • Thick white line down front of nose. This horse also has a star.

  8. BALD • Very wide blaze that extends to and may cover the eyes, nostrils, and upper lip. • Horses with bald faces often have white that extends to the lower lip as well.

  9. LEG MARKINGS If you know the parts of the leg then it makes it easier to identify the different markings

  10. Full SOCK • Small white marking up to and including the pastern.

  11. Half SOCK

  12. HALF STOCKING • White marking that ends around half-way up the cannon bone.

  13. WHITE HEEL • Small white marking on the heel, at the back of the hoof..

  14. STOCKING • White marking finishing around the fetlock (lamens term=ankle) or hock.

  15. IRREGULAR STOCKING • Stocking that continues up the leg • Stocking that continues up the leg, but only partially.

  16. Ankle/Fetlock White markings extending to and over the ankle

  17. CORONET BAND • Small white ring around the coronet band, above the hoof.

  18. Pastern White marking extending half way up the pastern.

  19. Half Pastern White marking extending half way up the pastern. Looks like a wide coronet band.
