  1. Aim: Students will be able to factor a trinomial where a is greater than 1. ax2 + bx + c Notes 10: X-Box Factoring HW #15: Red text p. 218 #s 1 – 7, and p. 222 #s 1-15 (1st column)

  2. Hi guys! I just realized that tonight is Parent/Teacher conferences. Tell your parents that I am sorry I won’t be here tonight. If they need to contact me, they know how to, by email or phone. See you soon!

  3. Directions: Cut along the dotted lines. Glue 2 of the x-box charts on page 33 and 34. Title page 33: Notes: X-Box Factoring where a > 1 *Some trinomial is not factorable, therefore it is prime. HW #15: Red text p. 218 #s 1 – 7, and p. 222 #s 1-15 (1st column) Study for your quiz.

  4. Page 33 3x2 + 2x – 8 1. FACTOR ____________________________ Create your x-box Since the product is negative, the factors must have different signs Factors x +2 3x, x ac What are factors of 24 that will give you 2? 3(-8) = -24 3x times ? = 6x 1stTerm Factor 3x 3x2 +6x = +2 Place the factors: 6 & -4 in the box and add an x to each What factors does 3x2 & 6x have in common? 3x − 6 4 + b Factor Last term -4 -4x -8 +2 Since b is positive, the larger factor must be positive x times ? = -4x 3x2+2x – 8 (x + 2 )(3x – 4) __________________ = __________________

  5. Page 33 5x2 – 12x + 4 2. FACTOR ____________________________ Since the product is positive, the factors must have same signs as b Create your x-box Factors 5x -2 5x, x ac What are factors of 20 that will give you 12? 5(4) = 20 x times ? = -2x 1stTerm Factor x 5x2 -2x = -12 Place the factors: 6 & -4 in the box and add an x to each What factors does 5x2 & -2x have in common? x − 10 2 − b Factor Last term -2 -10x +4 -12 5x times ? = -10x 5x2 – 12x + 4 (x – 2)(5x – 2) __________________ = __________________

  6. Page 34 2x2 – 9x – 18 3. FACTOR ____________________________ Create your x-box Since the product is negative, the factors must have different signs Factors 2x +3 2x, x ac What are factors of 36 that will give you 9? 2(-18) = -36 x times ? = 3x 1stTerm Factor x 2x2 +3x = -9 Place the factors: 3 & -12 in the box and add an x to each What factors does 2x2 & 3x have in common? x − 3 12 + b Factor Last term -6 -12x -18 -9 Since b is negative, the larger factor must be negative 2x times ? = -12x 2x2 – 9x – 18 (x – 6)(2x + 3) __________________ = __________________

FACTOR ____________________________ Create your x-box Since the product is positive, the factors must have same signs as b Factors 2x -5 2x, x ac What are factors of 20 that will give you 9? 2(10) = 20 x times ? = -5x 1stTerm Factor x 2x2 -5x = -9 Place the factors: -4 & -5 in the box and add an x to each What factors does 2x2 & -5x have in common? x − 4 5 - b Factor Last term -2 -4x +10 -9 2x times ? = -4x 2x2 – 9x + 10 (x – 2)(2x – 5) __________________ = __________________
