THE ANATOMY OF THE NEW GRE TEST FORMAT For once on the face of the Earth, every student or graduate must have heard about the Graduate Record Examinations, or popularly called as GRE. This well-acknowledged test is being designed to sharply evaluate and chisel your abilities to stand in the reputed foreign universities. In an attempt to make this test a user- friendly one, several changes have been made. Mode of Examination: A. Computer Delivered GRE General Test B. Paper Delivered GRE General Test The notable difference between the two is of time. While the computer-delivered test is of 3 hours and 45 minutes, the paper-delivered test is of 3 hours and 30 minutes. At the same time, the computer-delivered test contains two additional sections, namely 'Unscored' and 'Research.' An important point to bear is that the score of these two sections isn't counted in your total. Structure Of The GRE Test: The test is designed to critically evaluate your skills and capabilities in the fields of English and Mathematics is of nearly 4 hours in duration (Previously it was of 3 hours). The test type constitutes of both objective and subjective patterns. This overall increase in time furnishes the test- takers a little more time per question per section. Agreed with the fact that it can be exhausting for your mind and body. The new GRE pattern consists of the following domains: 1. Verbal Reasoning 2. Analytical Writing 3. Quantitative Reasoning The two additional sections included in the computer-delivered are: 1. Unscored 2. Research Verbal Reasoning:
This section discerns your ability to understand the text and words, discriminating between relevant and irrelevant, and thereby draw a conclusion based on your perspective. This domain consists of 2 sections. There are 20 questions in each of these sections (Previously, there were 30). The time allotted for each section is 30 minutes. Each verbal section is framed with ten reading comprehension questions, six text completion questions, and four-sentence equivalence questions. Quantitative Reasoning: This domain tests your ability to comprehend and analyze the given quantitative information, solve problems, and apply your necessary math skills for the same. Thereby, to test the math skills, an on-screen calculator is provided. It is also based on the same structure as the 'Verbal Reasoning,' i.e., two sections with 20 questions in each and a time of 35 minutes per section. There are questions based on quantitative comparisons, problem-solving, and data interpretation. Analytical Writing: This domain checks your knack as to how you examine a given situation or task and articulate (write an essay) it in your robust vocabulary. At the same time, you need to be very precise in using the elements of English and stay adhered to at your foci of discussion. A relevant term to be noted here is 'focussed response.' This consists of 2 tasks: "Analyze an Issue" and "Analyze an Argument", each with a duration of 30 minutes. The other two sections are unidentified 'Unscored' and identified 'Research.' The number of questions and the time for these vary. As mentioned, these are included only in computer-based tests and not in the paper-based. The unidentified section can appear anytime after analytical writing. The features like 'Mark' and 'review' and edit your response have also been included in the latest GRE pattern.
