About TOEFL In a bid to assess the English language proficiency of prospective non-native University students in the United States of America, a group of educators and government officials came up with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. The TOEFL exams are administered by the Education Testing Service (ETS) in at least 165 countries globally as standardized English language proficiency accreditation tests for prospective University students from nonEnglish-speaking countries. The tests are recognized in at least 135 countries worldwide. Mandate :- The conception of the TOEFL was birthed out of the need to assess the English language communication skills of prospective students. The test measures the proficiency of students in English writing, speaking, reading, and listening. A Brief overview:- The first TOEFL tests were offered in 1964. These tests were first administered by the Morden Language Association, which had been established in 1883 with a mandate to promote the study of the English language and literature. Funding for the exams came from the Ford and Danforth foundation. Since then at least 27 million students have sat for the TOEFL exams globally with offerings in over 165 countries across 4500 test centers. Over 2.3 million students sit for these exams yearly. In 1965 the administration of the TOEFL exams was taken over by the Education Testing Services (ETS) and the College Board. 1980 and 1986 subsequently saw the introduction of the Test of Spoken English (TSE) and the Test for Written English (TWE). These tests were offered as multiple choice and graded questions. In 1998 the first computerized version of the test was introduced as the Computer Based Test (CBT). The CBT was followed by the Internet-Based Test which was first taken by students in 2005. Since then no major changes have been introduced to the test. The TOEFL syllabus :- There is no specific syllabus for the TOEFL. The tests are generally designed to test comprehensive English communication skills across writing, Listening, reading, and speaking skills. These skills serve to ensure nonnative English speaking students successfully integrate into the various North American Universities. Although there is no specific syllabus for the TOEFL, a number of important guides to study have to be noted and followed by prospective students. An understanding of the composition of the test will guarantee the student’s success in these tests across the written, spoken, read, and listening spectrum. TOEFL registration :- The TOEFL tests are carried out over 60 times a year. Students can register for the test using the ETS website, by phone, or by mail. Walk-in registrations are not permitted therefore prospective students have to register 2-3 months prior to their preferred test date.
