Purpose • To assist parents of seniors to learn how they can : • Ensure that their children successfully meet high school diploma requirements • Ensure that their students are prepared for post-secondary choices i. e.. 4-year college, 2 year college, junior college, trade school, military or work

WHS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • FUTURE READY CORE • 4 UNITS OF ENGLISH • 4 UNITS OF HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS (ALGEBRA I, GEOMETRY, ALGEBRA 2 AND ONE HIGHER MATH – PRECALCULUS OR AFM) • 3 UNITS OF SCIENCE (EARTH, BIOLOGY AND A PHYSICAL SCIENCE) • 3 UNITS OF SOCIAL STUDIES (WORLD HISTORY, CIVICS/ECONOMICS AND US HISTORY • 1 UNIT OF HEALTHFUL LIVING (HEALTH/PE) • 13 Electives • Graduation Project • Total 28 Credits

UNC MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS • STUDENTS PLANNING TO ENROLL IN ONE OF THE 16 UNC SYSTEM CONSTITUENT UNIVERSITIES MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: • MINIMUM GPA 2.5 • MINIMUM SAT (CR + M) 800 • MINIMUM ACT COMPOSITE 17 • Students may complete paper applications but online application through CFNC is preferred • Transcripts may be sent electronically at www.cfnc.org or requested from Ms. K. Conner

  7. COMMUNITY COLLEGES • Students must complete an application for admission • Transcripts may be sent electronically at www.cfnc.org or requested from Ms. K. Conner • Take a placement test in Math and English at community college • SAT/ACT score may be used in lieu of placement tests if they meet the cutoff standards

DECIDING ON THE RIGHT COLLEGE • COLLEGE RESEARCH – COLLEGE WEBSITES AND CFNC.ORG • COLLEGE VISITS (PRIOR APPROVAL FOR EDUCATIONAL VISITS) Forms were distributed during homeroom . • DETERMINE THE COLLEGE THAT HAS THE MAJOR, SIZE AND CLIMATE FOR THE STUDENT TO BE SUCCESSFUL • COSTS/AFFORDABILITY • PROXIMITY OR DISTANCE TO HOME

PREPARING FOR COLLEGE • GRADES • EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES • COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES • SAT/ACT TESTING • SAT www.collegeboard.org • ACT www.act.org http://www.whiteville.k12.nc.us/groups/whscounselingdepartment/ • FOR UNC SYSTEM UNIVERSITIES MUST BE ACT PLUS WRITING FOR SCORES TO BE ACCEPTED • March 2013 ACT report lists colleges that students requested to receive scores by contacting ACT using their ACT account or send a request form. Fees begin at $11.00.

ACT College Readiness Benchmarks • Predictors of college success in the subject area • ACT College Readiness Benchmarks • College Course ACT Subject Area Test ACT Benchmark • English Composition English 18 • College Algebra Mathematics 22 • Social Sciences Reading 21 • Biology Science 24 • Compare students scores to these benchmarks to identify areas needed for improvement.

APPLYING FOR COLLEGE • STUDENTS MAY APPLY FOR COLLEGE BY: • COMPLETING A PAPER APPLICATION • ONLINE THROUGH THE COLLEGE WEBSITE or CFNC • ELECTRONIC TRANSCRIPT SUBMISSION OR TRANSCRIPT REQUEST TO MRS. CONNER • ONLINE THROUGH WWW.CFNC.ORG • EVERY STUDENT SHOULD SET UP A CFNC ACCOUNT TO ACCESS USEFUL INFORMATION • COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK EVENT 11-19-13 • DEDICATED TIME AND SPACE IN THE MEDIA CENTER • STAFF SUPPORT TO COMPLETE APPLICATIONS • MANY PRIVATE COLLEGES WAIVE APPLICATION FEES • COLLEGE BOARD FEE WAIVERS FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE USED WAIVERS TO TAKE THE SAT • ACT COLLEGE APPLICATION WAIVERS FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE USED ACT WAIVER TO TAKE THE ACT • WWW.CFNC.ORG/CAW
