  3. New Cells • Plants grow by making new cells, elongating cells, and differentiating cells • New cells are made at the tips of roots (with root cap), stems, branches, etc. by mitosis (cell division) • This location is called meristem – undifferentiated cells (stem cells)

  4. Elongated Cells • Just behind the meristem, the plant cells elongate (grow longer) • In response to gravity (gravitropism) and light (phototropism) • The plant cell wall can resist pressures 5 times found in car tires • The cell wall is made of cellulose – tough but flexiable • Forms the rigidity – allows plants to grow taller and push through the soil • Auxin is the plant hormone responsible for cell elongation

Differentiating Cells • Distinct cell types arise from precursor cells at the meristem and become different from each other – root cells, stem cells, leaf cells, etc. • Formation of the precursor tissue systems (three main types) • Parenchyma – typical plant cells – most of the metabolism takes place in these cells – synthesize and store organic products (photosynthesis) • Collenchyma – from the Greek word for “glue” – structural support in growing shoots and leaves – like the strands in celery • Sclerenchyma – from the Greek work for ‘hard’ - supporting tissue – mostly ‘dead’ cells with very thick cell walls
