  1. Welcome to 6th Grade Math Please pick up the green page and the 6th grade policies if you have not received one yet.

  2. Agenda • Introduction • Goals • Math Curriculum • Routines • Communication – office hours, email and class blog. • Grading – As much as we can

  3. Goals • For the student: Ask questions, seek solutions. • For the teacher: To foster math thinkers, not just doers; to make math active, relevant and worthwhile.

  4. Math Curriculum • Connected Mathematics • Order of Operations • Probability • Statistics • Rational Numbers (working with fractions, decimals and percents) • Two Dimensional Measurement • Variables and Patterns • One-Step and Two-Step Equations • Integers

  5. Routines • Weekly Reviews • Including an end of week mini-quiz • Problems of the Week • Nightly Homework – approximately 30 minutes.

  6. Office Hours • Math teachers are available Tuesday and Wednesday morning from 8:15 to 9:00 AM. It is helpful to send an email in advance, so that teachers are sure to be in their room during that time. Other appointment times can be arranged if needed.

  8. Grading • Summative Work (Tests, Quizzes and Projects 70% of the grade) • If a student scores an NYM on a test, they have two options: 1. Correct the test for a 70% or 2. Correct and complete a retake for full credit. • Before retaking an assessment, students must complete a corrections sheet and present it to the teacher to receive the retake. • If a student scores below a 90% they have the option of making corrections and retaking the test for full credit.

  9. Grading • Problems of the Week (10% of the grade) • While completing these students work on their larger problem solving skills. • We complete 3 a month. The 4th week of the month students choose one of the earlier problems to revise based on initial feedback and turn back in. • If not completed on time, students lose an “on time” check-off, and the assignment still needs to be completed.

  10. Grading • Weekly Review (15% of the grade) • Handed out on Monday and due on Friday, they cover concepts from previous weeks. • Quiz on Friday covers material on the weekly review. • Students can use the weekly review as a note sheet for the quiz. • No correction on the quiz – meant to give us a “snapshot” on student’s skills.

  11. Grading • Homework/Classwork (5% of the grade) • Students receive feedback on a 1-5 scale based on quality of work and completion of responses. This gets recorded in the grade book along with a check for “on-time” completion. • Late work still needs to be turned in, but students do not get the “on-time” check
