Unit 5 Stating That You Have Been Very Busy Period 1 & 2 Lead-in & Section 1 Objectives: Period 1 & 2 is intended to help students 1. to fully understand and use the language and recommended expressions for stating that how busy they are; 2. to appreciate different expressions that can express how busy you have been; 3. to know how to talk about that you have been very busy, using the common sentence structures and expressions learned.

  3. Lead-in Activities (15min) 1. Work with your partner, discuss the following questions, and then share your answers with the rest of the class. 1) Would you please talk about your daily schedule starting from when you wake up until you go to sleep? 2) What is your busiest time of day? 3) What do you say in English when you have been very busy? Suggested answer: Yes, I get up at 7:00 and then wash face and brush teeth. I go out for breakfast at 7:30. After breakfast, I do morning reading for about 20 minutes. I attend classes from 8:20 to 12:00. I have lunch at about 12:20. At 13:00, I go to do sports from 17:00 to 18:30. When I finish my supper, it is already 19:30. After having a bath, I go to the library to study. I usually go to bed at 23:30. That’s my busy day. Suggested answer: My busiest time of day is the morning. I get up at 7:00, and then go out to do morning exercise. I don’t even have time to have breakfast. After that, I just keep moving from class to class. Suggested answer: I will say: “I’ve been very busy.” or “I’ve been as busy as a bee.” etc.

  6. 2. Cultural tips 在汉语和英语文化中,表达自己多么繁忙的语言可谓丰富多彩。在理解或翻译时,应注意两种语言的各自特点,表达形式相似的当然可以做理想的对等互换。例如,在英语中 “Not a moment to spare” 可与汉语中的“忙得一点空闲时间都没有”对等互换。但是,“I’m snowed under”这一表达就需要在汉语中寻找意义接近的形式来对应,即 “忙得气都喘不过来”。又如,在非正式英语中 “I’ve been running around like a chicken with its head cut off”与汉语中的“晕头转向”相应,并可互译。
