  1. Laws governing student influence

  2. Quality work is common concern for both university personnel and students alike. • Students have the right to exercise influence over education at universities. Universities shall work for that students takes an active part in development of education. • Teachers and students have the right to be represented in the university board. • Students have the right to be represented with three members in the university board.

  3. Students have the right to be represented in the disciplinary board with two members. • A student union at a university is allowed to, if nothing else is written, appoint and dismiss student representatives in those boards, councils and committees where they are given representation. • Students at a university have the right to be represented in all decision making boards, councils and committees whose activity has an impact on their education or situation. If a decision is not taken by a decision making board, council or committee but one person (like the principal) then information about the decision should be passed on the student representatives in good time, both during the decision and the process leading up to the decision.

  4. The university shall in its annual report describe what actions it has taken to further the development of student democracy, how this has evolved and how it is divided, in a gender based perspective. The student union at the university has the right in the annual report to leave an account on their views on the universities development and results. The university has to send the student unions accounts in together with the annual report.

  5. The university has to give students that have taken part or participating in a course a chance to convey their thoughts and experiences with a course evaluation that is arrange by the university. The university is to compile a report on the collected data from the students and publish it, and also to notify about possible changes that is to be made on the course due to feedback from the course evaluation. The results are to be open for the students to see.

  6. Main tasks for the Swedish student unions

  7. Educational affairs • The student unions primary mission is to look after the students’ interests against the university. This work mainly consists of watching over educational affairs in the higher level of the university hierarchy, where they make sure that the opinions of the students are not forgotten. The most important tool in this work is the student representatives who stand for the voice of the students in different areas at the university.  • In order to develop the different courses and programs at the university the student union works to make sure that course evaluation is made in a meaningful way.

  8. Social affairs • Almost every student union in Sweden sees the social situation for their students as their responsibility. Areas such as health, economy and residence are included in this part of their activities. More concert it could for example be signing agreements for student discounts or cooperation with Housing Corporations.

  9. Political affairs • It is also up to the student union look after their students’ interest towards local regional and national decision makers. This is often done through different umbrella organizations. Worth to mention is “the united student unions of Sweden” Sverigesförenadestudentkårer, (SFS), where the majority of all the student unions in Sweden are connected. SFS also works at the international level.
