  8. 40 Year Pavement Life Design Initiative 20 Years 40 Years • Funding will start in FY 2013 • Work will start in FY 2012

  9. 40 Year Pavement Life Design Initiative • 40 Year Design Life Challenges • Defining pavement life, structural failure and functional failure. • Determining the effects of traffic prediction and environmental factors. • The requirement for new/improved material properties and mix designs. • The long term study of pavement performance related to pavement maintenance strategies, surface treatments and grooving. • Standardization of the Life Cycle Costs Analysis (LCCA) for a 40-year pavement design life.

  10. 40 Year Pavement Life Design Initiative • 40 Year Design Life Benefits • Sustainability • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) • Improved pavement life prediction • Development of new materials and new mix designs • Development of new performance specifications • Development of best practices for M&R

  11. High Temperature Pavement Test Facility

  12. Dynatest – Heavy Vehicle Simulator – Airport Version (HVS-A)

  13. Software Program Integration

  14. Cape May Research Taxiway • The objectives are to: • Rehabilitate former Taxiway C to develop a state of the art research test bed. • To evaluate various airfield lighting systems. • Centerline Lights • Runway Guard Lights – In-Pavement and Elevated • Touch Down Zone Lighting • Runway Status Lights

  15. Cape May Research Taxiway • Excellent opportunity to study the effect of environmental factors on the durability of new environment friendly (greener) materials used for surface layers in flexible pavements. • Used to improve and develop new instrumentation and data acquisition techniques.

  16. Industry Support / Workshops • Airport Consultants Council (ACC) • Asphalt Institute(AI) • American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) • Tri-Services (DOD) • American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA)
