Warm Up Question Which two seismic waves move out from the focus of an earthquake? Important Information • If you have your signed field trip flyer, put it in the middle of the table • Your science test over earthquakes is TUESDAY!!!
Devices that monitor faults • Creep Meter • Laser Ranging Device • Tilt Meter • Satellite Monitors
Creep Meter • Wire stretches across a fault to measure horizontal movement. A weight attached to a wire moves if the fault moves. Used on STRIKE SLIP faults.
Laser Ranging Device • Uses a laser to detect fault movements. Used on STRIKE SLIP faults.
Tilt Meter • Measures the tilt of the ground. If land rises or falls, water rushes to one side of the meter. Used on NORMAL and REVERSE faults.
Satellite Monitors • Measures rising or falling of the Earth by using radar signals similar to sonar. Used on NORMAL and REVERSE faults.
What’s OUR risk?? • So far, we CANNOT predict when earthquakes will occur. • Higher risks are near active plate boundaries • Serious earthquakes are rare east of the Rocky Mountains • Atlanta is under a “moderate” risk for earthquakes
Tsunamis • Waves that form from earthquakes that occur underwater. They can be as small as 1 meter tall or as tall as a 6 story building!
