  1. RESTORATIONand techniques Prepared by: Nur Alrai

  2. RESTORATIONthe process of the renewal and refurbishment of the fabric of a building. The process of historic architectural restoration is the "putting back" of a structure to its previous form at a particular date or period of time. The purpose of restoration is usually that of public education with respect to historic events of national or local consequence and to association with famous people or groups which may be either historic or contemporary. The actual value of a restoration is measured by its authenticity, and this authenticity frequently requires the removal of many substantial parts of a structure which obscure its educational utility. As a result, restored structures generally are planned for museum or museum-related uses. Restoration can, however, be combined with innovative adaptive reuse to produce buildings very suitable for certain contemporary uses; a degree of authenticity may be lost, but the bulk of the structure’s inherent qualities retained. RESTORATION

  3. RESTORATIONthe act or process of accurately recovering the form and details of a property and its setting as it appeared at a particular period of time by means of the removal later work or by the replacement of missing earlier works.Us. Secretary of interior`s standards RESTORATION

  9. RESTORATION TECHNIQUES • Consolidation • Reintegration • Reconstruction • Renewal of Fabric • Cleaning • Carrying

  10. Consolidation deals with three subjects. . Consolidation of building materials.. Consolidation of constructional system… application of chain bond, binder, bottom chord CONSOLIDATION

  11. . Consolidation of building materials:The building materials get damaged in time by natural effects. For example; Wood, stone and ADOBE ARE the natural materials used. So, Some special chemicals are used to consolidate the material texture to slow down the process of corruption. CONSOLIDATION OF BUILDING MATERIALS

  13. . Consolidation of constructional system:Earthquakes, ground movements cause damage in constructional systems such as split up or break up in walls at vertical. There are very much new technological techniques in consolidation. The consolidation of Beyazit Kulesi CONSOLIDATION OF CONSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEM

  15. . Application of chain bond, binder, bottom chordthe structures that show disperse danger in vertical carriers are consolidated by application of binders or bottom chords . This is an very old consolidation method. Buyuk Khan,Cyprus APPLICATION OF CHAIN BOND, BINDER, BOTTOM CHORD

  16. APPLICATION OF PROP KARIYE MOSQUE,TURKEY

  17. reintegrationIt is the application of completing the demolished or destroyed ELEMENTS and buildings with new contemporary materials. THE BUILDINGS THAT ARE DEMOLISHED PARTLY BUT CAN BE REUSED ARE AVAILABLE FOR REINTEGRATION. BUT REINTEGRATION OF THE BUILDINGS THAT LOST THEIR FUNCTIONS IS NOT NECESSARY. REINTEGRATION

  18. REINTEGRATION OF BEYLERBEYI MOSQUETHAT BURNED IN A FIREAND LOST HALF OF ITS DOME BEYLERBEYI MOSQUE,TURKEY

  19. reconstructionIt is re-building of a totally demolished, destroyed or very damaged monument or site with the documents known about it. The new building doesn`t have any of historical texture, material or workmanship of the one it replaced. So, the reconstructed building doesn`t have any historical value. It only occupies the mass and the space of the old one. RECONSTRUCTION

  20. reconstructionbut in some cases reconstruction is necessary. For example, if a building that completes the general view of a city or a monument is collapsed it can be reconstructed with no doubt. But it is important to have the documents of its old times such as ; photographs, technical data, graphical drawings. All the parts such as doors, windows, decorations that kept should be re-used. RECONSTRUCTION

  21. The Tokatilan Hotel was burned and reconstructed as Tarabya Hotel. Some protected parts Assembled again in new building. TARABYA HOTEL,TURKEY

  22. CIRAGAN SARAYI,TURKEY

  23. renewal of fabricsome buildings need some additions to satisfy the needs according to modern life conditions. But this additions must be different from the others to be separated the from the original ones. IF A BUILDING MATERIAL IS NEED TO BE CHANGED, THE NEW ONE CAN BE DIFFERENT IN SIZE,SHAPE,DIRECTION… RENEWAL OF FABRIC

  24. SOME EXTRA FUNCTIONS CAN BE NEEDED IN RE-USED HISTORICAL BUILDINGS. IT`S MORE APPROPRIATE TO BUILD THIS ADDITIONS IN A WAY NOT DISTURBING THE HISTORIC CONTEXT, NOT IN A WAY THAT COMPETING WITH IT. LOUVRE MUSEUM,FRANCE

  25. cleaningit is purifying process of an monument or a site from additions that doesn't carry any historical or aesthetical value. But the cleaning of additions and decorations made in different periods or art movements is not true. It deals with two types: adornment cleaning and façade cleaning. Air pollution, soot coming from cars darken the façades. specialists use mechanical, chemical, water, cleaning methods or absorbent jells or clays in cleaning of the façades. CLEANING

  30. carryingnatural disasters, geological structures or PUBLIC WORKS SUCH AS ROADS, BARRAGES CAN CAUSE THE REPLACEMENT OF A MONUMENT OR A HISTORICAL SITE. In this situation, carrying of the monument or the historical site to an appropriate place decided before is needed. CARRYING

  31. The abusimel temple was carried because of a barrage built on Neil river. ABU SIMEL TEMPLE,EGYPT

  32. The carrying application was made because of the road widening and the building taken back few meters. The stones numbered one by one and photographed to be used while rebuilding. MEHMET EMIN AGA FOUNTAIN

  33. CONCLUSION . This buildings are witnesses of the history and we still live within them, so its our duty to protect them because if we loose the only touchable remaining then we lose the history as well. We live within the history all the time. For example, Roman people walked nearby Coliseum in old times. And now we walk or we can pass nearby it with cars. Isn`t this amazing? It`s in our hands to keep the continuity of this structures for new centuries. If we don`t do that, how will it be possible to walk near the walls of an ancient monument and feel the moment?
