  2. Currency • 1 balboa = $1.00 • The Panamanian currency is officially the balboa and has been equal to the United States dollar since they gained independence in 1903. Panama has its own coinage but uses U.S. dollars for all its paper currency.

  3. Flag • This flag was to reflect the political situation of the time. • The blue was intended to represent the Conservative Party • The red was to represent the Liberal Party • The white was intended to stand for peace and purity • The blue star stands for the purity and honesty of the life of the country • The red star represents the authority and law in the country • Together the stars stand for the new republic.

  4. Sports • Panama’s most played sport is Baseball but they have a bunch of others. • Some are tennis, soccer, and basketball

  5. Food • Some things that Panamanians eat are tresleches which is a three different kind of milk cake with a lot of eggs. • Empanadas are rolls of about anything you want. You can put cheese, meat or vegetables in them

  6. Celebrations • Day of the Three Kings is on January 6th and is about remembering the three kings that brought gifts to Jesus Christ • Martyr's Day is on January 9 and is about remembering January 9, 1964 riots over sovereignty of the Panama Canal Zone. • Anniversary of Independence from Spain is November 28 and remembers Miguel Hidalgo’s impassioned cry for rebellion against Spain, given in the town of Dolores on September 16, 1810.

Important Places • An important place in Panama is Panama City because most people get jobs and celebrate there. • Another important place is the Panama Canal because lots of tourists come there. It is also a major shipping channel between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Panama which connects to the Pacific Ocean.

  9. Important Landmarks • French Park: French Park is located at the tip of Casco Viejo and near the French Embassy of Panama. The park was created as a monument to more than 200,000 French laborers who lost their lives during the construction of the Panama Canal. • In 1907, George Washington Goethals was appointed chief engineer of the Panama Canal project by United States President Theodore Roosevelt. Previous engineers had many difficulties in finishing the project, but Goethals increased speed and reduced sickness and death among canal workers by his special attention to mosquitoes and sanitation. He is credited for the completion of the canal in 1914, almost one full year ahead of schedule. A monument that is dedicated to Goethals stands in front of the Panama Canal Administration Building • The tall marble structure sits in a fountain and has Goethals's name etched on it.
