  7. After Battle of Bull Run • Clara realized need for supplies • Soldiers suffered from lack of supplies • Clara advertised for donations to buy them

  8. Travels with army ambulances for 3 years • US Surgeon General William Hammond commissioned Clara • Clara given pass to travel • Traveled with army ambulances • Became known as“Angel of the Battlefields”

  9. Named Superintendent of Nurses • Following Battle of Wilderness • Under Major General Benjamin’s command

  10. 1868 Went to Switzerland • Clara was exhausted • Went to Switzerland to rest • Learned about International Red Cross

  11. Letter Writing Campaign • Located soldiers missing in action • In 4 years located 22,000 soldiers

  12. Start of Red Cross in America • June 6, 1900 • President McKinley signed the bill • Clara was the first President • Remained head until 1904

  13. Life Dedicated to Humanity • Clara died April 12, 1912 • Age of 90
