  1. The Allied Victory How do the Allies defeat the Axis Powers?

  2. D-Day: Invasion of Normandy (European War) • 150K allied troops land:2,700 killed on first day. July 25 Allies start winning • One month later, one million more Allied troops arrive • General Eisenhower is named Allied Supreme Commander in Europe • June 6 1944: Allies launch an invasion of the beaches in N. France Great Britain

  3. By August, German army begins to retreat east • The Soviet army is pushing from the east • Aug 25 the Allied Army liberates Paris. France is back with the Allies • Eisenhower’s Allied army continues to push Germany from the west D-Day Battle of the Bulge • Dec 1944: In a last ditch attempt, Hitler decides to counterattack in the west • Battle of the Bulge – Germans break through weak American line at Ardennes • Attack catches Allies by surprise – Germans do well early • March 1945: The Allied troops are victorious – FDR dies in America in April

  4. Suicide Suicide Suicide • 3 million Allied troops now cross the Rhine River into Germany • Six million Soviet troops are pushing from the east • After marrying his girlfriend Eva Braun, Hitler and Braun commit suicide • On May 7, 1945 Germany unconditionally surrenders to General Eisenhower

The Pacific War • The Allies then moved to the island of Okinawa • As Japanese troops retreat the only thing between the Allies & Japan were a few islands and the kamikaze planes • March 1945: After a month of bitter fighting, the Allies take the island of Iwo Jima • Okinawa is one of the bloodiest battles of the war: 100,000 Japanese & 12,000 American troops killed in a month and a half of fighting • Despite the heavy casualties, Japan refuses to surrender. The United States must prepare for a full-scale invasion of Japan Iwo Jima Okinawa
