About ICSU • International NGO • Membership of the organization (121 National Scientific Bodies; 30 International Scientific Unions) ICSU Regional Offices • Africa (South Africa) inaugurated September 2005 • Asia and the Pacific (Malaysia) inaugurated September 2006 • Latin America and the Caribbean (Brazil) inaugurated in December 2006 • Arab Region (Host to be identified)

ICSU Mission: Strengthening International Science for the Benefit of Society HOW – through collaborative research projects • Identifying and addressing major issues of importance to science and society • Promoting the participation of all scientists in the international scientific endeavour • Creating international, continental and regional networks of excellence - interaction amongst scientists/insti/gov • Fostering regional networks of scientists & institutions to promote research & education– exchange of information, expertise, enhances regional/continental integration • Create synergies and areas of collaboration between scientists, scientific/academic institutions and agencies – (duplication of activities, competition on financial)

NRENs: the role of ICSU ROA • Establishing & implementation of NRENs • Linking the NRENs with networks & scientists at regional & global • Linking NRENs to ICSU Scientific Unions • Identify possible sources of funds • Link RENs to AU/NEPAD/ECA • Building & providing environment for NRENs • Supports and encourages all efforts that aim at identifying and addressing critical issues in Africa – (adopting eGY, ICSU Grants)
