  3. Common Nouns • A common noun names any person, place, thing or idea. • Examples: character bridge team holiday river language city university country food

  4. Proper Nouns • A proper noun names a specific person, place, thing or idea. • Begin a proper noun with a capital letter, and capitalize each important word. • Examples: Harry Potter George Washington Nile River Jonas E. Salk Middle School

  7. Plural Nouns Rule Add –s to most singular nouns. bell = bells book = books

  8. Plural Nouns Add –es to nouns that end in s, sh, ch, x, and z. lunch = lunches dish = dishes

  9. Plural Nouns For nouns ending in a consonant + y, change the y to an I and add es. baby = babies penny = pennies candy = candies

  10. Plural Nouns For nouns ending in a vowel add y add s. boy + s = boys monkey + s = monkeys

  11. Plural Nouns For most nouns ending in f or fe, change the f to v and add es or s. leaf = leaves loaf = loaves life = lives

  12. Plural Nouns Watch out for irregular plurals that follow no rules. You’ll need to memorize the plural form of these words. child = children mouse = mice foot = feet tooth = teeth woman = women man = men

Plural Nouns Apostrophes are used to show possession or ownership Singular nouns – add an apostrophe and s sister = sister’s horse = horse’s Plural nouns that end in s – add an apostrophe lions = lions’ artists = artists’ Zebras = zebras’ Plural nouns that do not end in s- add an apostrophe and s. women = women’s children = children’s
