What am I doing this morning? • I am describing some of my practice. • I am explaining my actions. • I am developing an epistemology of accountability through this. • I am offering up my living educational theories of practice (Whitehead, 1989) • I am seeking validation for my claims Renowden, BERA 08

  3. What is my context? • I am a Senior Lecturer in Education at St. Mary’s University College in Twickenham • I am Year 1 co-ordinator • I teach Professional Studies to undergraduate and postgraduate students • This involves teaching large groups at a time Renowden, BERA 08

  4. What has my research involved? My key focus has been How do I improve my practice? Through researching this I have claimed to know how to do this and generated theories of practice. I have also shown how I have held myself to account for my actions (Renowden, 2006) Renowden, BERA 08

  5. What evidence can I show for my accountability? • EARLI Conference paper (August 2005) • MA dissertation (July 2006) • Presentation at BERA (2006) • Presentation at college seminar (October 2007) • Doctoral study (ongoing) Renowden, BERA 08

Methodology • Choices influenced by my ontological and epistemological stance. • Methodology of choice is self study action research • This has certain qualities I frequently see myself as a living contradiction It uses action/reflection cycles My values are used as explanatory principles It uses procedures of personal and social validation to test my claims Renowden, BERA 08

  7. The creation of my living educational theory I create it by; • demonstrating how I am accountable for my actions • theorising my practice • seeking validation from my peers • using the research process to present my work and make it public Renowden, BERA 08
