Key terms • Academic awards – recognition given to individual cadets for scholastic achievement or excellence • Athletic awards – recognition given to individuals for athletic participation or excellence. • Commitment – a pledge or promise to do something; dedication to a long term course of action • Decorations – an indication of honor such as a badge, medal, or ribbon. • Individual awards – recognition given to an individual for outstanding achievements in academic, athletic, or military awards • Initiative – the power to begin or fallow through energetically with a plan or task; determination • Military awards – recognition given to individuals for participating in JROTC sponsored activities, for leadership excellence. • Miscellaneous awards – recognition given to individuals for participation in school or community service o in activates that enhance the JROTC program • Motivation – a force that moves a person to action; often inspired by an idea, fact, event, or goal • Responsibility – the quality of being reliable, trustworthy, and accountable for your actions • Unit awards – recognition given to a JROTC program for being an honor unit or a honor unit with distinction

Introduction • Awards are given to cadets in JROTC who excel. • There are two primary kinds of awards; unit awards recognizes unit excellence, individual Awards that recognize personal achievement. • Army JROTC awards cadets for extracurricular activities, excellence in competition, contribution to unit goals, and outstanding service. • To achieve any of these awards, however, you must prepare yourself for success.

  4. Strive for success • Success is a process in motion, not a fixed mark. • If you don’t continually grow and set new goals, you may feel dissatisfied, empty, aimless, or “stuck” • Striving for success takes effort, it isn't easy but its possible.

  5. Getting motivated • These are some examples of how to get yourself motivated: • Spend time reflecting on why your goal is meaningful to you. • Make decisions to take one step towards your goal, rather then feeling overwhelmed by the “big picture” • Reward yourself for a job well done • Examine and deal with obstacles • Begin or begin again

  6. Making a commitment • Commitment requires that you focused your energy on something specific • To make and keep a commitment, consider the fallowing: • State your commitment concretely • Get started and note your progress • Renew your commitment on a regular basis • Keep track of each commitment

  7. Showing initiative • When you show initiative, you push yourself to take first difficult step towards achieving your goal. • Initiation requires that you keep on top of your goals, and to listen to you instincts.

  8. Being Responsible • Being responsible is all about living up to your obligations, both those that are imposed on you as well as those that you impose upon yourself. • Responsibility can take enormous amounts of efforts. • Being responsible is a very important characteristic that other can see in you.

  9. Facing your Fears • Everyone will experience fear at some point in your life its how that you handle your fear that defines you. • Ways to deal with your fears are: • Acknowledgment and examining your fears • Develop a plan of action to overcome your fears • Move ahead with your plan

  10. Unit awards • The JROTC Awards Program offers three types of unit Decorations; Merit Unit, Honor Unit, and Honor Unit with Distinction Merit Unit Honor Unit Honor Unit with Distinction

  11. Individual Awards • Each Army JROTC unit can award various types of individual awards to its cadets for recognition of excellence, outstanding achievements, or superior performance. • There are two main types of individual awards: • Institutional awards • National awards

  12. Institutional awards • Academic Awards – 10 Ribbons • Military Awards – 15 Ribbons • Athletic Awards – 5 Ribbons • Miscellaneous Awards – 5 Ribbons

  13. National Awards • National awards recognize individual JROTC cadets fro heroic, distinguished meritorious, and other commendable acts and achievements.

  14. Army JROTC Awards • JROTC offers numerous awards to those who are willing to go above and beyond the minimum efforts asked of them. • The fallowing chart will offer you more details each award and what it takes to achieve them.

Conclusion • The JROTC Awards Program has much to offer • This program will recognize either individual or as a member of the unit for your accomplishments. • To earn these awards, you must be as competitive as your abilities and skills will allow you too. • The result of earning these awards is a feeling of accomplishments.
