  4. Educational Statement I am currently a student at the University of Guam taking the required courses for my teaching certification for the Guam Public School system (GPSS). The teaching certification I am pursuing is in the secondary level specializing in social studies, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Reading. At the same time I am seeking the possibility to pursue a Master degree in Secondary Education specializing in English as a Second Language. I have taken some ESL courses including, ED280-Introduction to Bilingual/Bicultural, ED481/G – Second Language Teaching Methodology, LN385-Structure of the Language (English), ED661-Second Language Curriculum Theory and Materials Development, and ED667-Reading and Writing for the Second Language Students. 5. Work Experience In School Years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003, I worked at the Guam Department of Education or better known now as the GPSS as a LOTE teacher at Jose Rios Middle School. At Rios Middle School, I taught language arts to all grade levels (6th, 7th and 8th). I resigned in June 2003 from Guam Department of Education and decided to accept an offer from the Micronesian Language Institute, University of Guam as a Program Advisor for a Title III Professional National Development Program under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. This program is funded by the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) to help pre-service and in-service teachers to become highly qualified teachers in their area of teaching. I am currently holding this position and at the same time currently taking classes as a project’s participant to pursue dual certification in ESL and Reading. 6. Educational Goal I’m interested in pursuing my master degree in secondary education specializing in ESL. In addition, I’m interested in completing my teaching requirement courses at the School of Education. The motive of my interest in pursuing my secondary master degree specializing in ESL and teaching ESL certification stemmed from the fact of being involved with family literacy activities in the community and my teaching experiences at the Guam Public School Systme. It is a known fact that there is a need and demand of good ESL or better known locally on Guam as Language Other than English (LOTE) teachers both on Guam and in the Micronesia Region. Zander Refilong Preservice Teacher University of Guam P.O. Box 5036 UOG Station Mangilao, Guam 96923 Tel: (671) 735-2197/8 Fax: (671) 734-0165 tonachaw2002@yahoo.com

  7. Short term plan I believe that the need for good ESL/LOTE teachers in the Guam Public School System is very serious and this is why I decided to pursue both my teaching certification in teaching ESL/LOTE and a Master degree in Secondary Education. My initial teaching certification will be in social studies at secondary level. I completed all my required courses and only my student teaching/internship is yet to be completed for social studies at the secondary level. My immediate plan is to go back to the teaching field right after I complete my teaching certification requirements. I will spend some years teaching in the Guam Public School System to fulfill my obligation under the Title III - National Professional Development Program which supports me toward acquiring my teaching credentials. I also plan to teach in some of the public schools within the Micronesian Region. I would like to do this so that I can become more familiar with the people and cultures of this region. I believe by doing this, it will equip me to be more knowledgeable of the diverse cultures in the region. Zander Refilong Preservice Teacher University of Guam P.O. Box 5036 UOG Station Mangilao, Guam 96923 Tel: (671) 735-2197/8 Fax: (671) 734-0165

  8. Long term plan My future goal is to continue my education in pursuing my terminal degree in the area of bilingualism. After reaching that goal, I would like to be an educational consultant in the area of bilingual education within the Micronesia Region. I would also like to do research in the area of language, culture and the people of the region. In conclusion, I am very fortunate to enroll in the course ED481/G - Second Language Teaching Methods during spring semester 2006. The class has been taught by Dr. J. Cyrus from the School of Education, College of Professional Studies at the University of Guam. Dr. Cyrus is not only teaching the various second language teaching methods but she also taught how technology can be part of teaching the English Language Learner (ELL) population.
