Persuasive Paper Review Persuasive Paper is written to try to convince someone to think a certain way on a certain issue based on facts/evidence/logic (Athletes should have to attend college at least 3 years) Little to no opinion is used within a Persuasive Paper (KU is better than K-State would not work as a topic) A Persuasive Paper MUST show both sides of an argument (if only one side is shown, it counts as Propaganda) The Refuting of an argument can happen in one of two ways Present the argument and immediately refute within the paragraph Separate into paragraphs (your argument, opposing argument, refute) Information must be properly documented (MLA format) Clearly state which side you are on in the intro. paragraph
What each style of refuting looks like • Refuting as you go: Many people believe that college students should be able to go pro as soon as they like. However, going to school gives the athlete the opportunity to develop a back-up plan if their athletic career doesn't work out.
Separating Athletes should go to college for more than one year so that they can get closer to a degree. By getting close to a degree, athletes have a chance to develop a back-up plan if their athletic career doesn't work out. Many people believe these athletes shouldn't have to go to college at all. They should have the opportunity to make as much money as they can. The problem with this is that many athletes get hurt early in their career and then have nothing fall back on. Even if education is only a back-up plan, it's still important.
When to use "Refute as You Go" method: • Don't know why, but you know why not • Can't build a solid case, but you can tear the other • one down • Most of your points are tied together • There's much more to refute than to defend • When to use "Separation" method • You have alot on your side to present • There are some terms and positions that need to be clearly defined • The points aren't really connected
