  1. Caisey Harlingten — Uses of Fungi in medicine

  2. Fungi exist everywhere. Fungus thrives in places where we do not want them. Fungi are a good source of food and medicine. They are neither plants nor animals. There are many recognized species of fungi that include yeasts, mushrooms, molds, etc. The food industry uses different fungi like mushrooms and yeast. Fungi are used in the pharmaceutical sector.

  3. Uses of Fungi in Medicine As Antibiotics: Fungi play a vital role in managing diseases in humans and animals. The discovery of Penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming changed the face of medicine. Penicillin helped doctors fight infections that would have otherwise killed people. Patients would die in hospitals with minor infections in scratches and cuts. The doctors use Penicillin as antibiotics to avoid infections and treat diseases like pneumonia, rheumatic fever, etc. Fungi are used in antifungal medicines.

  4. As Antifungal agents: Sordarins are extracts from fungi used as anti-fungal medicines for crops. Fungus grows on the surface of the leaves, plants, flowers, and fruits, inversely affecting the growth of the plants. If the crops are left unprotected, we lose more than 75% of the world’s production. Antifungal medicines ensure that the crops are safe from any harm.

  5. As immunosuppressant: Some fungi are used to make medicines for patients after an organ transplant. The fungi lower the body’s immunity, helping the body to accept the new organ. Without a lowered immunity, there are chances that the body will see the new organ as a disease and attack it. It may lead to the rejection of the organ. The fungi help the body accept the organ as its own and let the new organ function normally.

  6. As a means to stop excessive bleeding: Some fungi used in medicines lower excessive blood loss. They cause the blood vessels to become narrow, thus reducing the amount of blood lost. The fungi are used by women to stop excessive blood loss during menstruation, at the beginning of menopause, and also to expel the placenta after childbirth. The alkaloids found in this kind of fungus are used for treating migraines and reducing blood pressure.

  7. For removing bad cholesterol: Some fungi remove bad cholesterol from the human body. It decreases the risk of a heart blockage which leads to stroke, heart attack, etc. The fungi can also regenerate tissue at wound sites. Fungi and other natural herbs are useful for human beings. Research shows that natural medicine is safe as they do not have side effects. People like Caisey Harlingten have dedicated their life studying alternative medicine. They aim at making the world a better place for the human race. People opt for alternative medicine as they are safer than traditional medicine.

  8. Alternative medicine can complement traditional medicine by reducing its side effects. Research shows that alternative medicine can help patients with choric diseases lead better lives. They promote well-being and happiness in patients. Most alternative therapies are non-invasive. In older times, alternative medicine was unregulated. It has changed in recent times where people choose to study alternative medicine as a career option.
