LCNE:How to do a job search By Bobbianne Doerr
How to Do a job search? • Make sure you have a base resume and cover letter • Make sure all the spelling on your resume & cover letter is correct • With any interaction you have be humble with the employer. “You need them, they don’t need you.” • Read the job description. If it has Required and you do not have that qualification, don’t apply. • Network. • Make yourself relevant meaning tailor your cover letter and resume. • Emotionally Detach Yourself • Give the Reader What They Want • Never Underestimate the Reader…Be honest! • Gatekeepers are looking to excluded you not include you • Know the process. Resumes are scanned by a computer first before a human ever sees it. (Gouveia, 2012), (Hopkinson, 2012), (Salpeter, 2012), (Benedict, 2012)
More help • Mail your resume • Call employers • Tailor your cover letter and resume • Show that you want the job
Attend a Job fair • Be choosy about the events you attend • From that event chose three to four employers that match your professional goals • Research these companies and make a resume for each company • Then if you have time investigate other companies and a few extra resumes • Prepare as if you are going to interview with all these companies in the same day. • Dress to interview • Make a 30 second commercial and practice it • Don’t bring friends! • Talk to people and be polite. It will help with networking • Don’t take freebies! • Send a thank to the companies you talked with. (Robert Half International, 2012)
Why is it important to be Proactive? • Our job is to find you jobs and help you learn how to apply and also give you career based skills but we cannot interview for you. • Don’t be Jane! • Follow through on leads • Look for connections and get yourself out there! • Troubleshoot your search regularly. Is my resume working? Am I getting interviews? Am I getting job offers? • Follow up! Even if it is dropping off a resume or I have faxed a resume to an employer, you must follow up! (BraccioHering, 2011)
Do’s and Don’ts of a job search • Don’t be too particular from the job description getting your dream job takes time • Don’t discount temporary positions • Don’t have a bad attitude • Don’t use a work or an unprofessional email on your resume • Don’t included too much information on a resume only go 15 years back • Do keep your options open • Plan your work and work your plan • Do have tact but be persistent “If you are rejected for a job you should send a thank-you note, thank the employer for the opportunity, and wish them well. No one does that. When the next opening comes around, he'll remember you” • Remember you are trying to fit the company’s needs not yours (Farrell, 2012)
