  4. System Elements INPUTS TRANSFORMATIONPROCESS ENVIRONMENT BOUNDARY OUTPUTS Is this part of the system?

Continue • Interface: system components responsible for transformation process of input and output at the boundary (e.g. nose, keyboard, screen) • System’s interaction • Understanding the working of the systems • Granularity (e.g. Car (air-condintioner, electric)) • Black-box approach (Calculator, Telephone)

  6. Feedback and Control • Feedback: measure the performance • Positive or negative • e.g. car moves out of the lane • e.g. students get good grade • Control: Modify the system’s process to achieve its goal • Controller (inside or outside the system)

Types of System • open  closed • (Greater degree with the environments vs. self sufficient (independent)) • dynamic  static • (the more dynamic the system  more flexibility between components  function in different ways as activities change) • continuous  discrete • (values can vary by small amount vs. Discrete or distinct values) • e.g. (traffic light: identifiable states) • e.g. (mercury-based Thermometer)

  8. More System Concepts  • Structure: • Set of relationship between components • System hierarchy • System within system within system • Sub vs. Supra-system • e.g. physical universe (galaxies -> solar system -> planets -> Earth -> all livings -> etc.)

  9. More System Concepts  • Holism • A system can be understood in terms of its entirety. • Much wider perspective • Sick person can be treated in terms of his lifestyle, psychological side, etc.

  10. Home Work • Consider the system of a large Hospital, e.g. ALHABIB • Give example of: • System goal, inputs, components, processes, outputs, sub-systems, supra-system, external feedback mechanism • Give example of 3 different systems that you are a part of in everyday life
