A DoD DCMO Enterprise Information Web Dr. Brand Niemann Director and Senior Enterprise Architect – Data Scientist Semantic Community http://semanticommunity.info/ AOL Government Blogger http://gov.aol.com/bloggers/brand-niemann/ February 6, 2012 http://semanticommunity.info/A_DoD_DCMO_Enterprise_Information_Web/EIW_RFI_Two_Hour_Oral_Presentation
Overview • Highlights • 0. Preface • 1. Introductions (10 minutes) • 2. Our Best Strategic Advice to You • A Practical Systems of Systems of Architecture for DoD - Gall's Law (Brand Niemann) (10 minutes) • Be Informed - 57 successful implementations since 2006 (Mills Davis) (10 minutes) • Semantic Insights Research Assistant - Build a simple report and an ontology of the content (Chuck Rehberg) (10 minutes) • The Value Proposition of Agile Analysis - Invert your "bath tub" with Spotfire Analytics (Jim Hawley) (10 minutes) • TIBCO Solutions (Gallery) - The Power of Now (Eugene Coleman) (10 minutes) • Recorded Future - Backed by the CIA and Google (Jason Hines) (10 minutes) • Intelligent Agent Capabilities for Text Mining and Cyber Security (Cutter Consortium) (Chris Whaling and ArunMajumdar) (10 minutes) • Linked Open Data with Virtuoso Server (Blog) (Kingsley Idehen) (10 minutes) • The Voice of Industry (NCOIC-NGA CRADA) and a DoD Apps Challenge (EPA Apps for Environment Challenge) (Brand Niemann) (10 minutes) • 3. Data Science for DoD Apps (10 minutes) (next item time permitting) • 4. Questions and Answers (10 minutes)
Highlights • 1. Doing this as a private citizen • Can lead as retired government annuitant or have three DoD qualified companies interested in hiring me to lead this work. • 2. EIW Solution Pattern Maps to Our Value Proposition of Agile Analysis • Ours: Collection Analysis Communication. • EIWs: Gather Aggregate and Translate Display. • 3. The EIW plans to apply Semantic Web industry standards including Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL) to the greatest extent possible in the solution. • Our Systems of Systems of Architecture uses both conventional and semantic technologies and does all three: SOA-Cloud-Semantic. • 4. Together RDF and OWL will allow the Military Services to maintain their distinctive information systems while maintaining alignment to a common vocabulary at the enterprise level to support analysis and policy making • Be Informed federates knowledge models, their search, and applications across the enterprise.
Highlights • 5. Notional schedule of EIW (12-18 Month Increments) • Semantic Community does this in much shorter increments (iterations) because of Our Value Proposition of Agile Analysis. • 6. Off-the-Shelf (OTS) Technologies: Per government law and policy, COTS (including open source software) is acceptable for use in this program. • We use OTS and COTS. • Be Informed Uses Eclipse. • 7. SIRA Does A Vision for DoD Solution Architecture • SIRA does the same for the CIA (see TIBCO presentation). • 8. Be Informed Palette has Standardized Primatives That Can be Exported to OWL • a. Relations: Assigns. • b. Concepts: Registration, Transaction, Object, Implicit Property, Activity, Document, Appointment, Note, Time limit, Involvement rule, Weak Entity, Identifying Property, Naming Property, Referencing Property, Coordinate, Address, Classifying Property, Point in Time, Dimension, Count, Amount, Duration, Description, Reference Concept. • c. Details: Time Limit Expiration Date, Postulation completed, Legal definition, Description. • File, Export, Be Informed, OWL. • 9. Semantic Community is supporting The Voice of Industry (NCOIC-NGA CRADA) and a DoD Apps Challenge (EPA Apps for Environment Challenge) • Final Topic.
0. Preface • The DoD Enterprise Information Web (EIW) is pioneering the adoption of Semantic Technology and approaches that can be the way forward for enterprise business intelligence and solution architectures in the DoD. • Semantic Community is the voice for "Do-It-Yourself" enterprise information web and analytics. Our thesis is that semantics makes sense, but you don't need to wait for the big COTS vendors in order to make an information web nor run analytics across it. Anybody can do it by following a few simple rules, and using some readily available and quite affordable tools. • http://semanticommunity.info/A_DoD_DCMO_Enterprise_Information_Web • Show you how we do it, and other technologies that represent solutions to one or more issues that the EIW seeks to address, but also they go beyond to stake out some additional capabilities. • SemTech SFO 2011 – Showed Revelytix-Spry Work • SemTech DC 2011 – Showed DoD DCMO EIW Work • SemTech SFO 2012 - Proposal for DoD DCMO EIW (new since above) and VA Benefits Blue Button Work (Be Informed 4)
1. Introductions • Brand Niemann - Director and Senior Data Scientist, Semantic Community • Mills Davis, Project Director, Project 10x and US Be Informed Representative • Chuck Rehberg, CTO, Semantic Insights • Jim Hawley, Director of Government Programs, Spotfire, TIBCO Software, Inc., and Eugene Coleman, Director, TIBCO Global Architect Group • Jason Hines, Federal Director, Recorded Future • Chris Whaling, CEO, Textrium, LLC, and ArunMajumdar, Senior Consultant, Cutter Consortium • Kingsley Idehen, President, Founder & CEO, OpenLinkSoftware
2. Our Best Strategic Advice to You • Provision Instead of Procure: Build the DoD IG in the Cloud (RFI) and Build DoD (Vocabularies) in the Cloud (3rd Annual DoD SOA & Semantic Technology Symposium 2011) • Linked Data on Mobile Devices for the Warfighter: Building a Knowledge-Centric System in the Cloud for Traumatic Brain Injury (LandWarNet 2011) • Dynamic Case Management for Business Agility: Build the DoD DCMO in the Cloud Spotfire Dashboard (SemTechBiz DC 2011) • And we have demos for each, but time does not permit us to show them • So Highlights of Our Presentations in the Next Slides
