  1. 4 States of Matter 8/24

  2. Matter - any substance which has mass and takes up space • List 5 Examples of Matter: • List 5 Examples of things that are NOT matter:

  3. When a substance changes from one state, or phase, of matter to another we say that it has undergone a change of state, or we say that it has undergone a change of phase.

  4. These changes of phase always occur with a change of heat. Heat, which is energy, either comes into the material during a change of phase or heat comes out of the material during this change. However, although the heat content of the material changes, the temperature does not.

  5. Add these to your definitions: • Solid – form of matter with a definite shape and volume, individual particles vibrate but do not switch positions. (Least amount of energy and movement)

  6. Add these to your definitions: • Liquid – particles are attracted to each other, but are not in a fixed position. • (A little more energy and movement)

  7. Add these to your definitions: • Gas – particles have enough energy to overcome any attractions. Particles move freely and independently. • (Even more energy and movement)

  8. Add these to your definitions: • Plasma – high temperatures cause some of the electrons normally found in an atom to escape and move outside of the electron cloud. • Found in stars, the sun, the solar wind, lightning, fire and neon signs. • (The most energy and movement)

  9. Watch the Video - Energy and the Four States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas and Plasma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88tK5c0wgH4

  10. Draw the molecular images of Gas, Liquid, and Solid
