  1. “Definition of Pride – what you do when no one is looking” Miami University Press & Bail Techniques Coach Tim Cooper

  2. Important Dates • “Cradle of Coaches” Clinic • March 31st – All access pass to MIAMI football. • Senior One Day Camp • Monday, June 11th. • QB/WR Passing Camp • June 11th – June 12th. • 7 on 7 Team Camps • July 21st & July 28th. • Spring Practice Dates • March 24th – April 19th (Tues/Thurs/Sat/Sun) Contact: Tim Cooper by email or phone (coopert@muohio.edu or 513-529-3319)

  3. PRESS PHILOSOPHY • Puts the defensive back into a more attacking mentality • Allows the defense to dictate to the offense what routes they can run (simplifies what you practice) • Disrupts timing. This is the most important aspect of playing press technique

  4. WHY PRESS? • Eliminates “stemming” by the receiver. They must show their release and lets us anticipate (read) routes quicker. • Eliminates space and high percentage passes (off = hitch vs. press = fade) • Situational – we want 1st down shots! • Any level (HS, Div I, II, or III) • Based on technique not skill, press takes a great technician! (skill helps!)

  5. DB Drills:Route Tree vs. “OFF”

  6. DB Drills:Route Tree vs. “PRESS”

  7. PRESS STANCE • Feet parallel, shoulder width apart. • Hands must be up and elbows in. • Eyes focused on the laces of the back foot. • Good athletic stance, must be comfortable.

  8. PRESS TECHNIQUES • Off Hand Jam (bump and run) • Align based on coverage called, this is our base technique • FEET – buzz feet and keep hands up until the receiver shows his release. Use your feet to cut off the receiver’s vertical release. This is your “cut off” step. • HANDS – shoot your hand opposite the release, this is your “off hand”. • EYES – on an outside release get your eyes on the receiver’s hips, versus an inside release get your eyes on his shoulders. Your eyes need to be on the receiver until you are in a “control” position.

  9. PRESS TECHNIQUES (cont.) • Inch • Primarily used versus a receiver who is aligned off the L.O.S. • Used versus receivers who use multiple moves at the L.O.S. • At the snap “inch” or “slide” back to buy time while the receiver works his release. • As the receiver moves up field collision him with the proper leverage. • Be patient and keep shoulders square to the L.O.S. with your hands up ready to collision the WR.

  10. PRESS TECHNIQUES (cont.) • Quick or Tough Jam (change up) • Jam with the one hand where your leverage is. Take a shot! • Your hand belongs on his near breastplate. • When the receiver releases straight at you place both hands on his chest (2 hand jam). Release the hand to the side of the receiver’s release. • Fake two hand (change up) • Shoot both hands at the receiver then pull back (inch). • The purpose is to freeze the receiver at the L.O.S. • This is a “counter technique” after you have mastered the bump and run, inch, and quick jam techniques.

  11. PRESS DRILLS • Cut off / Technique Drill • To work “feet-hands-eyes” • To work good cut off step • To work different moves / techniques • Basketball Cut Off • Play with feet • Multiple Quicks / Speed Turns • To practice speed turns and body position in a short amount of time • Quick / Speed Turns with a release • Add the element of a ball and receiver

  12. BAIL PHILOSOPHY • Great compliment to playing press (natural disguise). • Avoids complacency by the defensive back and adds to his arsenal. • Take pressure off the defensive back vs. the fade route • Cause confusion for the offense.

  13. WHY BAIL? • #1 reason is disguise and to create confusion for the offense. • Good change of pace, gives them something to think about. • Takes pressure off of the corner. Put you players in situations to be successful.

  14. BAIL STANCE & START • STANCE • “Bail” stance must look exactly like “Press” stance • Feet parallel, hands up, good athletic position and be comfortable. • START • Use a “pivot” on the outside foot. • Get out inside the receiver’s frame and with a sense of urgency for the first five yards. Create a “cushion”. • Be ready to use your “bumper”. • Get you eyes on your key (QB or WR) and play coverage accordingly.

  15. BAIL DRILLS • Start Drill • Open and run – working on pivot. • Weave Drill • Open and run – working on weaving from a “bail” position. • Bail Breaks • Open and run – working on sinking hips and transitioning. • QB Indicator Drill • Open and run – using technique base on a key.
