  2. Operational Walkthrough Taking a Single Shot Survey • Turn On the REC (Ranger Explorer Controller). • 2. Using the Infrared communication cable provided with the REC, connect the socket end of the cable to the communication port of the REI and the other end of the cable to the 4 Pin serial port of the REC. • 3. Select the Green “Connect to Tool” button on the left hand side of the screen. • 4. A sequence of communication messages will be displayed while the REC and REI synchronize, including a progress bar along the bottom of the screen. NOTE: At this point we will assume you have read chapter 5 from the RANGER Software Navigation manual. .

  3. Operational Walkthrough Taking a Single Shot Survey 5. Scroll the icons located on the bottom of the menu screen to the left or right until the single shot Icon is located and tap it once. The icon will become centralized and will expand. Make sure the Infrared communication cable is still attached to the tool for communication. Tap the icon once and wait for the next screen. WARNING: HARD KNOCKS RESULT IN COSTLY REPLACEMENT. TAKE CARE WHEN HANDLING THE RANGER SURVEY INSTRUMENT.

  4. Operational Walkthrough Taking a Single Shot Survey 6. When single shot survey screen is displayed, the REC communication cable can be removed from the tool. Assemble REI into suitable Ranger Running Gear and lower into hole to start point of survey. When system is in position for first survey point, ensure adequate time is allowed for the REI to settle. Select button located in the top left corner of the screen. If the button displayed is , it means the REC is busy, wait until it is green. Ranger Single Shot Running Gear

Once you have pressed the button for the first time, the date and time of the taken shot will be recorded in one of the three available windows at the bottom of the screen. Two more shots will be available for recording and will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. A maximum of three shots are available when in Single Shot Mode. 8. Once satisfied with the recorded survey points retrieve REI and disassemble survey tool from running gear. Ensure that the coupling cable is connected to the tool before pressing the button. All recorded surveys will be uploaded to the controller for analysis.

  6. Operational Walkthrough Taking a Single Shot Survey 9. Once uploaded the screen will automatically open to “View Survey” Screen. Tap the “+” tab on the right of the screen to open survey data. 10. Press “Return” Button to exit to main menu. To transfer the data to a USB mass memory device (also shown in more detail later in this course) : • EXPORTING SURVEYS FROM REC TO FLASH DRIVE • If already connected to the REI, to view a survey select the button in the main menu screen. Otherwise select the button from the first • Ranger screen. • 2. Select surveys that are to be copied (to the USB stick) by clicking on the individual check boxes or select the “SELECT ALL‟ box. This option allows you to select all the surveys in the REC without selecting them one by one. • 3. Once required surveys are selected press the ‘COPY TO FLASH DRIVE’ button. • 4. The transfer of files is completed when this message box appears. Press ok. The USB Flash Drive can now be removed.

Using the communication cable provided, connect the socket end of the cable to the communication port of the REI while the other end of the cable is attached to the 4 Pin Serial port of the REC. 2. Using the stylus provided with the REC tap the button located on the left hand side of the touch screen or navigate the light blue selection box over the button using the keypad arrows and press the button.

Using the stylus or the keypad, scroll through the icons at the bottom of the main menu screen. Select the Multi shot icon and either tap the enlarged icon again or press the enter key . NOTE: To scroll using the stylus, flick the icons either to the left or right.

  9. Operational Walkthrough Taking a MultiShot Survey 5. A list of procedures will be shown while communications are established between the REC and REI. Note: It is now time to assemble the REI into the above configured Running Gear suitable to be attached directly onto the Core Barrel Inner Tube Assembly after removing the Core Lifter Case. Once dry released into the drilling fluid and assembly has located in the core barrel Outer Assembly, surveying can commence at the bottom of the hole and each rod removal from the drill string.

  10. Operational Walkthrough Taking a MultiShot Survey 6. You are now ready to create a survey. 7. Select whether the survey is an “IN RUN” (Surveying while entering hole) or an “OUT RUN” (Surveying while being withdrawn from hole).

Enter the correct details for “SURVEY”, “SURVEYOR”, “LOCATION”, “START DEPTH” and “DEPTH INT” by selecting the textbox you want to edit and pressing the keyboard activation button . As changes are made, the textbox color will change from light blue to gold. To remove the keyboards press the keyboard activation button again. 9. Once all data has been finalized press the green button. NOTE: “START DEPTH” and “DEPTH INT” values must be strictly numeric with a maximum of one decimal point. Previous survey details will be set as the default values for new surveys.

  12. Operational Walkthrough Taking a MultiShot Survey 10. When the REI is in position for surveying, select the button. The button replaces the ‘Take Shot’ button until the data of that particular survey point is successfully recorded. Once the shot has been recorded, the button replaces the original button until the REI is ready to take a new shot. 11. Once the REI has completed taking a survey shot, the “DEPTH” will change to indicate the depth of the next survey point. The “DEPTH” value is directly proportional to the “DEPTH INTERVAL” value which can be changed between surveys. NOTE: The REI must be kept still while taking a survey reading.

During the surveying of a hole, the “DEPTH” and “DEPTH INTERVAL” can be changed between each survey point by selecting the desired textbox, followed by the keyboard icon and then entering the new values. 13. Once survey point has been recorded, move the REI to the next depth interval and repeat steps 10 to 13 as necessary. The current survey can be stopped and a new one started by selecting the button. All previous surveys including the current one are then available for download using the button.

When surveying is completed disassemble survey tool from running gear and re-establish the link between the REI and REC using the infrared communications cable. Ensure the cable is attached to the REI, before selecting the button. 15. Details of the communication link between the REI and REC will be seen, including the progress of the survey download details.

  15. Operational Walkthrough Taking a MultiShot Survey 16. Once download has been successfully completed the screen will automatically change to the main menu screen where the icon can be selected to view all the downloaded surveys including the latest survey.

  16. Operational Walkthrough Viewing a Survey on the REC VIEWING A SURVEY ON THE REC 1. If already connected to the REI, to view a survey select the button in the main menu screen. Otherwise, select the button from the first Ranger Screen. 2. A list of surveys will be displayed including the survey name, date and time. If a large number or surveys is listed, scrolling of the surveys is possible by flicking the scroll in the up or down direction. The last survey that has been taken is displayed first in the list. Select the required survey from the list of surveys. Note: REI does not need to be synchronized with REC to view surveys

  17. Operational Walkthrough Viewing a Survey on the REC 3. Press the expansion button on the right hand side of the survey item to view the location of the survey. Once expanded press the shrink button. 4. Once the correct survey has been selected, press button to view the data of each survey shot. 5. A scrolling list of all the shots taken for the selected survey will be displayed.

  18. Operational Walkthrough Viewing a Survey on the REC 6. Press the expansion button on the right hand side of the survey point. The survey point will expand and display all relevant shot data. To view gauge interpretations of the data, flick the table format to the left. Once expanded press the button to Minimize.

  19. Operational Walkthrough Viewing a Survey on the REC 7. Survey points can be scrolled up or down the screen depending on how many surveys and survey shots there are even when in expanded mode. If the survey shots roll of the screen, they can be viewed by flicking the scroll in the up or down direction. 8. While viewing the survey data, the “SURVEY NAME”, “TOOL ID” and the “# of SHOTS” can be also viewed and confirmed at the top of the screen.

  20. Operational Walkthrough Viewing a Survey on the REC 9. The survey data also displays the battery status of the REI when the survey shot was taken. A green battery indicates that the REI battery is in good condition, while a red battery indicates that the battery life of the REI is close to or already has reached its minimum capacity for allowing the REI to operate correctly and in return may cause survey reading to be inaccurate. At this stage a battery replacement for the REI is recommended.

Operational Walkthrough Exporting Surveys from the REC to a Flash Drive • EXPORTING SURVEYS FROM REC TO FLASH DRIVE • If already connected to the REI, to view a survey select the button in the main menu screen. • Otherwise select the button from the first Ranger screen. • 2. Select surveys that are to be copied (to the USB stick) by clicking on the individual check boxes or select the “SELECT ALL” box. This option allows you to select all the surveys in the REC without selecting them one by one.

  23. Operational Walkthrough Exporting Files from a Flash Drive to PC EXPORTING FILES FROM FLASH DRIVE TO PC 1. Insert the Flash Drive into a free USB slot on your PC. 2. A connection sound will be heard and AutoPlay tab should be seen on the bottom windows toolbar. 3. Open the AutoPlay tab and select “Open folder to view files”.

  25. Operational Walkthrough Exporting Files from a Flash Drive to PC Each survey will have both a CSV and XML file format. The CSV file can be opened using Microsoft Excel to view survey results, while the XML format is needed when importing the survey data into the RANGER SAS software for further survey analysis. 5. Open the folder representing the Tool ID number of the REI that the survey was taken with, followed by opening the “Downloaded” folder. 6. Single shot surveys are distinguished by the date and time that the survey was taken. While Multi-shot surveys are distinguished by their names as well as by the time and date of the taken survey. 7. To view survey data in excel format, double click the survey file with the correct CSV extension at the end of it. This will automatically open Microsoft Excel and display the survey data.

  26. Troubleshooting USB Error Messages During the transfer of files from the REC to the Flash Drive (USB STICK), a number of error messages may appear if correct conditions are not met during the file transfer process. These error messages will be triggered with the following actions: 1. Attempting to copy a survey from the REC to a Flash Drive without the Flash Drive being connected to the REC. Make sure that the USB stick provided with the REC has been inserted into the correct slot (USB host) at the bottom of the REC boot, as shown to the right.

  27. Troubleshooting USB Error Messages During the transfer of files from the REC to the Flash Drive (USB STICK), a number of error messages may appear if correct conditions are not met during the file transfer process. These error messages will be triggered with the following actions: 2. Attempting to copy a survey file from the REC to the USB Flash Drive when the file has already been copied to the flash drive. If the file was named “Single Shot” (followed by a date and time) as seen in the above example, the message box will inform you that a survey file with the same name and time already exists. It will than ask whether you wish to overwrite the existing file with the new survey file by selecting YES or to leave the original one by selecting NO.

  28. Vital Points to be Aware Of Ranger Survey Running Gear VITAL POINTS TO BE AWARE OF: BRASS BARREL HAS IDENTICAL THREADS AT EITHER END TO ENABLE IT TO BE REVERSED; THIS OPTIMISES ITS WORKING LIFE. Only use minimal amounts of a petroleum jelly or O-ring grease on O-rings and threads. Do not use pipe wrenches on brass barrel joints. O-rings have a dual function. In addition to their retaining action, they seal the barrel from ingress of drilling fluid. Continually check O-ring condition. Always use correct barrel size for your specific drilling conditions. If you’re in doubt about size to use contact your RANGER distributor.
