  1. CHAPTER 5 • FORMULATING AN IMPLIED MAIN IDEA • IN THIS CHAPTER YOU WILL LEARN: • What an implied main idea sentence is and why • it is important to be able to formulate one • Three methods of formulating an implied main • idea sentence

  2. What is an implied main idea sentence and why is it important to be able to formulate one? Every paragraph has a main idea. There are paragraphs that do not have stated main idea sentences. In such paragraphs, authors suggest the most important point without stating it directly as a single sentence. The author implies the main point. Implied main idea sentence: A sentence formulated by the reader that expresses the author’s main point about the topic. An implied main idea is also known as an unstated main idea, an indirectly stated main idea, and a formulated main idea.

  3. Why is it important to • formulate implied main idea sentences? 1. Your comprehension will be limited unless you are able to formulate main ideas that are implied. • 2. When you formulate main ideas, it helps you • remember material better. • 3. College instructors assume that students will read carefully enough to understand implied main ideas. • Test items are just as likely on implied main ideas • as on stated main ideas.

  4. When an author implies the main idea, the reader must reason out the author’s main idea and formulate a sentence that expresses it. All the elements you need in order to formulate the main idea are already in the paragraph.

  5. What are three methods of formulating an implied main idea sentence? You must begin by reading the paragraph and determining its topic. Ask yourself this comprehension monitoring question: “What is the single most important point the author wants me to infer about the topic of this paragraph?” Use one of the three formulas, depending on what the author gives you in the paragraph.

  6. Essential word or phrase that needs to be added Sentence that almost states the main idea Formulated main idea sentence + = Formula 1: Add an essential word or phrase to a sentence in the paragraph that almost states the main idea.

  7. Formula 2: Combine two sentences from the paragraph into a single sentence. Sentence that expresses the rest of the main idea  Sentence that expresses part of the main idea + Formulated main idea sentence =

  8. Formula 3: Summarize important ideas into one sentence or write one sentence that gives a general inference based on the details. When you create this kind of formulated main idea sentence, you will often have to use some of your own words along with certain important points from the paragraph. Summarize important information into one sentence Formulated main idea sentence + = Write one sentence that gives a general inference based on the details

  9. Three ways to formulate implied main idea sentences:

  10. Things to keep in mind when formulating an implied main idea sentence: 1. You must always use a sentence to express a formulated main idea, but never just a phrase. This means you must know the difference between a sentence and a phrase.

  11. Things to keep in mind when formulating • an implied main idea sentence: • 2. A formulated (implied) main idea sentence must • meet the same requirements as an main idea. • A formulated main idea must: • be a complete sentence that includes the topic of the paragraph. • express the author’s most important general point about the topic. • make complete sense by itself (without having to read the rest of the paragraph). • A formulated main idea sentence can be worded in various ways, • as long as it meets the three requirements.

  12. Things to keep in mind when formulating an implied main idea sentence: 3. A longer passage often has an implied overall idea that you must formulate. The overall formulated main idea is a general statement or inference that is based on the main ideas of the selection. The formulated overall main idea summarizes or sums up the main ideas of the individual paragraphs of the selection, just as the main idea of each paragraph sums up the individual details in the paragraph.

  13. AFTER READING THIS CHAPTER, YOU SHOULD KNOW: • What an implied main idea sentence is and why it is important to be able to formulate one • Three methods of formulating an implied main idea sentence
