  2. Main Idea • The most important idea of a reading passage is called the main idea. • The main idea is often found in the first or last paragraph. • The main idea is sometimes not found any in one sentence. You can figure out the main idea by thinking about all the ideas you have read about.

  3. Sample Passage Miranda stepped on the the bus, pausing for a moment to wave good-bye to her father. She was leaving for the summer-three months away from home and on her own for the first time. Her father smiled as he would miss her greatly. They’d become so close since Mother died. But Miranda couldn’t pass up the opportunity to travel to Mexico with other volunteers from her youth group. Together they would rebuild a small village that had been destroyed by flooding. It was time to go. Never had Miranda had felt so excited yet so nervous.
