Add a friend. • Settings – At Home page a small V arrow. Look at the options in Privacy. At the moment its very open. On your own account it might be best to set all to “Friends” only, to avoid to many unwelcome Friend requests.

  7. Twitter • U3a test account. On http://twitter.com/ • email= mondayu3a@hotmail.co.uk password= u3a.Monday Full Name= Brianu Use as you like – but nothing that anybody can be identified! Have joined Chester Zoo as a Follower. • At Home page click on the Cog to change Profile & Settings. Look at the options Security and privacy.

  8. Buying a Computer or Laptop • A desktop computer is more powerful and has more facilities than an equivalent Laptop for the same price. But of course they are not portable and not compact. • A good idea is to look in a shop such as PCWorld, John Lewis or Curries and then check for a similar model On Line. • Aldi sell Medion products, which are very good value. • On Line I favour http://www.ebuyer.com/ or http://www.dinopc.com/

  9. What you need in a computer • Look for the following specifications = • Hardware Minimum requirements = • 3Gb Memory or RAM, 300Gb Hard Drive or HDD, I3 or I5 processor. • Screen size, now all wide screen. Built in Camera – your choice. Blue tooth – to move files from your smart phone. • Laptops should have Wireless built in. A touch screen with Windows 8 gives the full experience but is another £100. • HDMI connector. Some don't have VGA- still need.

  10. Reading • http://windowssecrets.com/ Create an account, its free & easy. Good free manuals. Good on Windows 8.1

  11. Virus Checker - AVG • Virus checker. ** Don't buy one **. AVG is excellent and is free. • New computers will come with a limited time virus checker. Then you have to pay. • First uninstall any other trial or out of date Virus checker. Its VERY important to have only ONE virus checker installed. • Then download AVG Anti-Virus Free 2014 and install from= • http://free.avg.com/gb-en/free-antivirus-download

  12. Updates • Allow all Windows Updates. Its best if set it to automatically download but install on request, else it may automatically restart the computer which may abandon work in progress. • Flash & Java updates. Will be automatic, allow them both but watch for them trying to install other unnecessary software. • Java tries to install “Ask” toolbar which is definitely junk. • Never install these by a by a link in an email.

  13. Malware • Two free programs to run if any problem or strange behaviour and about once a month. • Malwarebytes fromhttp://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free click on the Free Download Now and install. . Or Adaware from http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Click on the Green Download. Next screen Download, I just want free.., At the top select “Download File & Run.

  14. Purchasing a Laptop • http://www.ebuyer.com/store/ComputerLaptops are £280 upwards. • http://www.ebay.co.uk • http://www.amazon.co.uk • http://www.sendmediscounts.co.uk/ • http://www.ehow.com/computers/ • http://www.dinopc.com/

  15. Internet only Laptop • Another approach is an Internet only Laptop. • Search for Chromebook on http://www.amazon.co.uk • They run Google chrome browser only. Its simple to maintain, 7hr battery life. Use with Office 365 only. You cannot run normal Programs.
