  4. WATER INFORMATION SYSTEM Spanish exercise • INTRODUCTION. MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THE WATER PLANNING: • To achieve the objective of at least good water status, aiming at enhancing protection and improvement of the aquatic environment, • 2. The provision of the sufficient supply of good quality surface water and • groundwater as needed for sustainable and balanced water use. • 3. The promotion of sustainable water use based on a long-term protection of • available water resources; • BY MEANS OF, • Increasing water resources availability • Protecting its quality • Rationalizing its use

  7. WATER INFORMATION SYSTEM Spanish exercise • 2.1. INFORMATION SYSTEM PURPOSE: • To store and manage information. • To support different data versions: Official data and working data. • To be unique data source for the Water Plan. • To be accesible through Web interface (authentication). • To develop an architecture supporting and according to INSPIRE. • To be patform for the creation of objective reports. • To become a standarized platform for information exchange among different authorities in the same river basin district. • To enable and ease information and public participation.

  8. WATER INFORMATION SYSTEM Spanish exercise • 2.2. DECISION MAKING SUPPORT SYSTEM PURPOSE: • To collect data from the information system. • To give results back to the information system. • To allow analysing at different spatial scales. • To show synthesis of the pressures & impacts analysis. • To give objective response from a selection of measures taken. • To allow comparing different scenarios. • To support economic assesment of the measures. • To facilitate results for further discussion.

  20. WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise • VERSION CONTROL – AUTHENTICATION • Alpha-numeric data change rate is very high • Spatial data change rate is very low • Water Plan needs: each single alpha-numeric data change/insertion must be validated, qualified, and traceable • Versioning has been implemented: • Anonymous access for querying (general public) • Editor for editing • Validator for validation • Historical tracing Vali dator Editor Query (general public)

  23. WMS WFS CSW Gazetteer WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise • GEOGRAPHIC SERVICES: DUERO GEONODE • WMS CUSTOM SYMBOLOGY • (SLD-Styled Layer Descriptor) • SLD is an OGC specification • Compatible with WMS 1.1.1, 1.3 • Allows user defined symbology applied to WMS • SLD file can be placed in any server  harmonized symbology set • WMS requests (howto): • Add parameter &sld=<url to SLD file> • Example: • http://localhost:81/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=C:/WISE/Trabajos/map/dmaduero.map&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&Request=GetMap&LAYERS=MasaSuperficialFluvialEmbalse&SRS=EPSG:23030&BBOX=244000,4601000,259000,4616000&FORMAT=PNG&WIDTH=800&HEIGHT=600&SLD=http://localhost:81/sld/custom_symbology.sld

  24. Harmonizing WMS symbology • Agreements needed: • WMS specification version >= 1.1.1 • Layer names • Fields SLD - Storage WMS - 1 Request includes SLD server URL WMS - 2 USER

  25. WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise • APPLYING SHARED SLD SYMBOLOGY TO WMSs

  26. WMS WFS CSW Gazetteer WISE GEONODE Spanish exercise GEOGRAPHIC ISSUES: DUERO GEONODE METHODOLOGY FOR METADATA Based on 3 pillars: 1. People participation: who should participate? 2. Metadata collection method: a questionnaire 3. Metadata creation process definition

  27. WISE GEONODE Spanish exercise 1 2 3 • METHODOLOGY FOR METADATA. 1st PILLAR: • People participation: who should participate? • The data producer, or the person responsible for the data. Task: metadata information provision • Spatial information cataloging expert. Tasks: • Ask for the information required for building the metadata • Arrange the information provided • Create the metadata file • (*) Ideally both participants are the same person

  28. WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise • METHODOLOGY FOR METADATA. 2nd PILLAR: • Metadata collection method: questionnaire • The metadatais collected using a questionnaire • Transforms strict ISO metadata elements into simple and familiar questions, providing examples • It can be customized according to the kind of data and the organisation • The information experts don’t need to go throughthe metadata specification 1 2 3

  29. WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise METHODOLOGY FOR METADATA. 3rd PILLAR: Metadata creation process definition 1 2 3 Step 5: xml creation using the catologing tool Step 1: contacting Step 2: collecting information Step 4: content validation Step 3: information arrange and repair

  30. WISE DATA MODEL Spanish exercise • CONCLUSIONS • The data model developed for the Duero SDI node has proved to be suitable to fullfil the Water Plan information needs. • The effort in creating metadata and versioning are key issues in order to ellaborate the Water Plan using the most appropriate data. • The pilot exercise for the data model might be a good example for WISE implementation. • A geonode is a collection of interoperable services, WMS included, but also WFS, CSW, etc. • It is important to find agreements to offer MS the possibility of working in an interoperable way.
