  1. NEED OF VALUES FOR GLOBAL CHANGE Management by Values Neha Shrivastav Kalyani Yambal Nikunj Vidhate Vivek Sharma Barud Ismail

  2. What is Value? DIFFICULTY IN MEASURING I

  3. How do Values effect? • Values contain a judgmental element which carries an individuals ideas as to what is right , good or desirable. • Values help us to distinguish • Between ‘desired’ and the ‘desirable’ • Between ‘delectable’ and the ‘electable’ • Between ‘short term’ and the ‘long term’ • Between ‘the preya’ (the pleasant ) and ‘the shreya’ (the good)

  4. Let us start from Scratch… • Post 1947, colonization of the ‘educated’ Indian mind, by a new brand of : Americanism. • At the one end of spectrum, we acquired a constitution based on rights and, at the other, we saw the hurried transplantation of alien cultural way of life and norms for success and growth. • Sri Rabindranath Tagore had said, “We in the east have had to arrive at our own solutions to the problem of life” • He warned; “Artificial uniformity leads to lifelessness”

  5. Look at the Irony • When we (INDIA) moved toward ‘Americanism’, the other countries have delved into their depths for saving Organisational Principles. Malaysia: ikhlas (sincerity) INDIA: Let’s See Japan: Bushido (Spirit) Taiwan: chin-shin (trustworthiness) Korea: ren (generosity) & li (etiquettes) China: bao (gratitude/karma) Thailand: baramee (politeness/consideration)

  6. Few thoughts on Indian Value System • Guru Granth Sahibhas advised, ‘If you want to bear fruits, you have to reach for the roots.’ • Swami Vivekananda once remarked, ‘One side of New India is saying: What the Western nations do is surely good, otherwise how did they become so great? On the other hand ,Old India is saying: The flash of lightning is bright, but only for a moment; look out boys, it is dazzling your eyes, beware!’

  7. What is ‘swadharma’ of India? Antardrishti (Intuitive Wisdom) India's Core Competence Antarmukhita (Inwardness of Mind) Antarshuddhi (Purification of Emotions)

  8. TYPESOF VALUES Peace, Security, Satisfaction, Salvation etc. Integrity, Honesty, Hard-work, Compassion etc. Truth, Confession, Tolerance, etc. Unity, Respect to all, Humanizing, Equality etc.

  9. VALUES FROM THE ‘DEEP STRUCTURE’ • The individual must be respected – show it. • Cooperation and trust with all – express it. • Jealousy is harmful for mental health – avoid it. • ‘Chitta-shuddhi’ or purification of the mind – adopt it. • Top quality product and services – provide it. • Work is worship – worship it. • Containment of greed – shell it out.

  10. Value or Skill based Management?? The choice is ours…

  11. Value – Skill Matrix A Research Finding on the Value – Skill relationship Location: India Sample Size: 2000 employees Level: Director Level Downwards Companies: Indian Oil, Tata, Bharat Elec, Godrej, etc. Question Asked: Where do you place the group which constitutes the majority of employees? Surprising rather Shocking Answer: IVth Quadrant (values weak – skill strong) A finding/ research undertaken by Dr. S. K. Chakaraborty.

  12. Peep into Mythology Mahabharata Ashwatthama and Arjuna Case of Brahmastra Ramayana Rama and Ravana

  13. Contrast Analysis: Japan vs. America It is obvious that in American culture ‘humility’, ‘gratitude’ etc. are Values too tender and soft. Yet such ‘tender’, normative ‘human’ values have not prevented Matsushita from attaining the hard positivistic ‘organizational goals’ : growth, quality, PROFITS.

  14. How are some of us doing it? INFOSYS BELIEVES THAT…. • A sound value system is what differentiates long-term players from others • Money is not the only motivator; respect, dignity fairness and inclusiveness are essential to get the best out of employeesand customers. ITC Ltd..strong steps in social entrepreneurship • Its has taken various sustainability initiatives in areas of economic, social and environmental development. • “e-Choupals”,Choupal Fresh and Choupal Sagars • Natural resource management by wasteland management and rain water harvesting. • Sustainable livelihood creation bythrough women’s economic empowerment and genetic and improvement of livestock.

  15. Value Based Management (VBM) • VBM is a business philosophy and management system for competing effectively in the global marketplace • Based upon the inherent value, dignity and empowerment of each person-particularly each employee, customer and supplier. • VBM calls for a new philosophy of leadership. It holds that an "authentic" leader sees him or herself as a teacher, as well as the ultimate servant. • A well-designed VBM system sharpens and crystallizes the leader's philosophy around a set of universal moral principles.

  16. Value Based Management (VBM) • According to VBM, a leader should always strive to empower and encourage people to be responsible for and make decisions in areas directly affecting their lives and work, and at the level of their competence. • Decentralization of power, responsibility and accountability to avoid potential abuses which occur when these are centralized or concentrated. • VBM builds checks-and-balances in the company's governance and accountability system.

  17. The Basic Elements of VBM VBM's 3 components of value are realized in: • A foundation of universal moral values, starting with the intrinsicvalue of each person - each employee, customer and supplier. • Success in the marketplace based on delivering maximum value-higher quality at lower prices-to the customer. • Rewards based on the value people contribute to the company-as individuals and as a team, as workers and as owners.

  18. WHY DO WE NEED VALUES IN GLOBAL CHANGE? • GLOBALIZATION • USE OF HIGH TECHNOLOGY • VALUE ORIENTED TRAINING • OVERCOME CULTURAL AND SOCIAL BARRIERS • REDUCTION IN STRESS AT WORK PLACE • EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION • TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT

  19. What can I do? • Treat others the way you wanted to be treated. • Find out qualities and spirit hidden in you and try to bring it out in others. • Show concern for people’s well-being, it fosters great relationship. • Show responsibility, it brings out trust and quality. • Caring fosters collaboration and daring • Truthfulness fosters honest relationships. • Self-control fosters creative, wise decisions
